Eva Longoria Recalls Filming 'So Many' Sex Scenes on ‘Desperate Housewives’

Eva Longoria is looking back on one of the most talked-about storylines from Desperate Housewives — and the many awkward moments that came with it.

During a recent interview with People, the actress reflected on filming Gabrielle Solis’ affair with teenage gardener John Rowland, played by Jesse Metcalfe, revealing that the pair spent much of the early seasons shooting intimate scenes and finding ways to laugh through them.

Longoria said she and Metcalfe quickly developed a close friendship while working together on the ABC hit. Metcalfe played John as a 17-year-old gardener caught in a secret relationship with Gabrielle, the glamorous but unhappy wife of Carlos Solis. While the storyline created some of the show’s most memorable moments, Longoria said the reality behind the scenes was far less dramatic.

“Every scene with Jesse — I heard him on a podcast the other day talking about it — Jesse and I had so much fun,” Longoria said. “We got along the best — he’ll tell you that. We had the best time, we laughed so much.”

Longoria also pointed out that the age difference between their characters often confused viewers. On-screen, Gabrielle was portrayed as an older married woman, while John was a teenager. Off-screen, however, the actors were much closer in age.

“He played 17 years old, but he was 25 years old. I was playing 40, but I was 29,” she said. “So we were basically the same age — I was aged up and he was aged down. People always forget that.”

Because so much of their storyline involved romantic encounters, Longoria said the set could easily have become uncomfortable if they had not approached it with humor. “We had so many bathtub scenes and sex scenes; you have to lighten the mood sometimes,” she said.

Desperate Housewives aired from 2004 to 2012 and became one of the defining television dramas of the era, with Gabrielle and John’s secret affair emerging as one of its earliest breakout storylines. The series spent five straight seasons among television’s 10 most-watched shows and helped turn Wisteria Lane into a pop-culture landmark.

Longoria said she remains grateful that Metcalfe was her scene partner during that period. “I adore Jesse Metcalfe,” she said. “I’m so happy it was him that I got to experience that global phenomenon with.”
