Benjamin Poindexter appears to be on a self-destructive streak, having seemingly achieved his goal of getting revenge on Vanessa. However, Matt Murdock attempts to snap his rival out of his unstable state, but Bullseye doesn’t make it easy, as he begins to talk about balancing the scales for killing Foggy.

The mention of his late friend’s name enrages Daredevil, but he manages to get his emotions under control. While memories swirl in his mind about his dear friend, Matt is faced with an opportunity to leave Bullseye to be captured by the Anti-Vigilante Task Force; however, he digs deep and offers mercy to Poindexter, putting himself at risk to save the life of someone he previously tried to kill.

While Foggy Nelson has been repeatedly confirmed to be dead and gone after the events of Daredevil: Born Again season 1, Elden Henson did get to return to the role for a series of flashbacks that play out during this episode. We see Matt and Foggy working as lawyers back when their careers first began, with a particular focus on one case involving Foggy’s childhood bully.

In these flashbacks, it becomes clear that Foggy’s kindness and ability to forgive are an inspiration to Matt, and one that leads to his eventual choice to save Bullseye. On top of that, the flashbacks also show a connection between Buck, who is tasked with killing Foggy’s old bully, and Vanessa choosing to showcase the iconic white painting that would eventually be one of Wilson Fisk’s most prized possessions, against her employer’s wishes.

While the audience has already learned that BB Ulrich is behind the City Without Fear broadcasts, where she wears a Mayor Kingpin face mask, Daniel has largely been blind to this betrayal by his friend. However, when confronted with the facts, he can no longer turn a blind eye to BB’s betrayal, and he learns for certain that she is leaking information.

This can be seen when BB visits Daniel at the hospital, where Vanessa is being treated for her injuries. BB pushes to learn the condition of the Mayor’s wife, but Daniel is initially reluctant. However, it didn’t take long for BB to get on his good side and get the inside scoop.

A short time after this plays out, Daniel sees a news broadcast that offers an update on Vanessa’s critical condition, which confirms to him that BB is the person on the inside who is leaking information. However, it appears as though he may still be too soft to do anything about it.

Why Buck Takes Daniel On A Road Trip

While Daniel has never been one to get his hands dirty before, this episode is the moment that Buck Cashman decides to put Daniel’s loyalties to the test. After having intercepted the witness to the Northern Star ship incident in a previous episode, Buck takes Daniel on a long drive deep into a secluded wooded area. Daniel fears for his own life, believing that Buck may kill him for letting information leak from inside the Mayor’s own inner circle.

However, when Buck eventually pulls over and calls for Daniel to join him, Daniel learns the truth about their secret mission. While we don’t see Daniel participate in hiding the body, it is heavily implied that this is a turning point for the character. Daniel can either fully commit to being a part of Fisk’s team, getting his hands dirty, and burying a literal body in order to prove his loyalty. Or, he could end up in a shallow grave along with the Northern Star crew member.

With Daniel’s newfound knowledge that BB is behind the leaks and the tough decision Buck forces him to make, this is a pivotal moment for the character and may prove to shape his journey throughout the rest of the series, establishing where his morality truly lies. Unfortunately, even if Daniel gives in to what Buck and Fisk require of him, this is just the beginning of them asking for bigger and more challenging favors that he will be forced to comply with.

Now That Vanessa Is Dead, What Will Happen To Wison Fisk?

Vanessa Injured in Daredevil Born Again Season 2, Episode 4

Despite doctors trying desperately to save Vanessa’s life, her condition declines, and by the end of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 5, Fisk’s beloved wife flatlines and passes away. While it seems that she experienced some peace and joy revisiting important moments in her memories, Fisk is left without the one person who helped to keep him from unleashing the full extent of his rage.

In the original Daredevil series, Fisk was a brute with an anger problem who frequently lashed out and violently killed others, usually with his bare hands. This continued in his earlier appearances in the MCU when Fisk would display incredible acts of rage and violence in shows like Echo and Hawkeye. However, since reuniting with his dear wife, it appears that Fisk was able to keep calm and work more strategically.

Unfortunately, without Vanessa by his side and the AVTF in full force at his command, it seems highly likely that Mayor Fisk will now double down on his efforts to eradicate vigilantes from New York and likely lash out at anyone who gets in his way. Vanessa’s death is sure to be a major defining moment for what comes next with Fisk and set up the major conflict that will define the rest of this season.

This will make Fisk a far more challenging rival for Daredevil to face off against, but it also leaves Fisk vulnerable, as his emotions will guide his actions more than his rational mind. All of this is still to come in the final three episodes of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, and it’s certain to be explosive.
