In this week’s Death of Silver Surfer #4 by Greg Pak, Sumit Kumar and Tiago Palma, Marvel reveals the brand-new Silver Surfer, and it is Agent Kelly Koh (who has been working for the mysterious Bureau of Alien Neutralization), who has been an adversary to the original Silver Surfer for most of this series, but in this latest issue, Koh realizes that she has been on the wrong side of the fight all along.
And now, taking a page out of Fantastic Four: First Steps and its female Silver Surfer, the Marvel Universe now has a female Silver Surfer of its own, as the original Silver Surfer, Norrin Radd, has transferred part of his Power Cosmic to Kelly at a moment of great tragedy in her life.
How does Kelly Koh become the new Silver Surfer?

As noted, Kelly Koh was an agent for an anti-alien group (that Greg Pak had introduced in the Planet Hulk: Worldbreaker miniseries) that had been purchased by Eaglestar International’s CEO, Dennis Harmon. who plans to use anti-alien hatred to turn aliens into scapegoats in his quest for power. That quest already seemed to hit paydirt when Harmon got a hold of the Blood of Galactus, which is deadly and dangerous on its own, and which Harmon is using to create a horde of attackers to attack Earth so that he can blame the attack on aliens.
However, on the way to Earth, the horde attacks the space station Kelly’s mother is staying on, and Kelly rushes to her mother’s side too late to save her, but as her mother dies, Norrin gives Kelly the Power Cosmic, and so she becomes the new Silver Surfer to help avenge her mother’s death.
What does Greg Pak have to say about Kelly Koh’s debut as the Silver Surfer?

Greg Pak, the writer of the series (and the co-creator of Kelly Koh), was quoted by Marvel in a press release about Kelly’s debut, “The Silver Surfer has always been famously one of Marvel’s most emotionally tormented characters, and Kelly with the Power Cosmic absolutely follows in that tradition, ha ha! But she’s also got a no-nonsense, cocky, dangerous edge that makes her much less predictable than Norrin and a huge challenge to the villains—and heroes!—of the Marvel Universe. Dontcha dare miss DEATH OF THE SILVER SURFER #5 to see what’s next for both Norrin and Kelly — and the Power Cosmic!”

Also in its press release, Marvel notes, “With the Fantastic Four’s blessing, Kelly will soar through the Marvel Universe moving forward as the new Sentinel of the Spaceways!” so it certainly suggests that Norrin Radd will, in fact, die in the finale of this series, but is interesting that he is not dead YET, and he is shown in preview pages of the finale, fighting alongside Kelly…

Norrin Radd’s fate will be revealed on October 29th when Death of the Silver Surfer #5 comes out.
