Pakistani television drama Jahannum Ba’raasta Jannat has become the subject of widespread online criticism under intense scrutiny online after several scenes from the show went viral across social media platforms.

The series, which premiered on Green Entertainment on March 29, was expected to deliver a tense and engaging cross-border spy thriller. However, instead of impressing viewers, it has triggered a wave of memes, criticism and unflattering comparisons with the popular Indian spy franchise Dhurandhar.

The show stars Umer Aalam, Momina Iqbal, Bushra Ansari and Javed Sheikh, follows a storyline centred on espionage and conflict between India and Pakistan. However, viewers have said the drama struggles with authenticity, with many pointing to awkward dialogue delivery, exaggerated performances and a mix of accents that they found unconvincing.

Several viral clips from the show have been widely shared online, with audiences questioning the makers’ attention to detail. One of the most talked-about moments involved the alleged depiction of Mumbai’s Bandra-Worli Sea Link as the headquarters of RAW in New Delhi. The scene quickly attracted criticism and became meme material across social media platforms.

Many viewers also claimed the series appeared to be influenced by the success of the Dhurandhar franchise. The comparisons have only grown stronger following the release of Dhurandhar 2 and the continuing popularity of the franchise.

According to reports, Pakistan’s entertainment industry has recently shown an interest in producing projects that serve as counter-narratives to India’s big-budget spy dramas.

Earlier, the Sindh Information Department had reportedly announced Mera Lyari as a response to Dhurandhar, even describing the Indian films as “propaganda.” Although Mera Lyari is yet to be released, Jahannum Ba’raasta Jannat has already found itself under the spotlight.

The Dhurandhar franchise, directed by Aditya Dhar and fronted by Ranveer Singh, has built a strong fan following due to its scale, action sequences and storytelling. Reports suggest that the films have earned more than Rs 3,000 crore globally across all instalments.

Dhurandhar 2 features an ensemble cast including Ranveer Singh, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, R Madhavan, Sara Arjun, Rakesh Bedi, Gaurav Gera, Danish Pandor and Manav Gohil. The latest film continues to perform strongly with audiences, making the comparison with Jahannum Ba’raasta Jannat even more noticeable.

Social media reactions to the Pakistani drama have been largely negative. Many users described the dialogues as “cringe-worthy,” while others criticised the “unconvincing Indian accents” and “glaring factual errors.” Several viewers also said the production quality felt weak compared to modern Indian spy thrillers.

What was intended to be a serious spy drama has now become an online talking point for very different reasons. Instead of being praised for its suspense or performances, Jahannum Ba’raasta Jannat is currently being discussed for the mistakes and inconsistencies that viewers say distracted them from the story.
