The Little 500 bicycle races draw thousands to Indiana University each year for a fun-filled weekend packed with activities. To prepare for a campus bustling with pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles and scooters, IU Public Safety is working with internal and external university partners to keep everyone safe during race weekend, April 24 and 25.

“Safety is always top of mind for us, but the public also plays a key part in ensuring we’re all safe,” said Hannah Cornett, public information officer for IU Public Safety. “Being prepared and informed, and watching out for one another, will help us all enjoy the weekend.”

To get ready for Little 500, IU Public Safety and the IU Foundation hosted a tabletop exercise that included members of Bloomington Fire Department, IU Student Foundation, Office of Student Life, University Communications and Marketing, Intra Collegiate Emergency Medical Service and others to test their emergency preparedness.

The scenario-based exercise required everyone to consider how they would work together to respond to an emergency that posed a safety threat. This is one of many exercises IU Public Safety engages in each year to strengthen their response.

“Testing the plans we have in place against different scenarios helps us prepare to respond when we’re needed,” Cornett said. “We encourage everyone to think ahead about safety and practice their plans, too.”

Tips to stay safe during Little 500

Stay connected with friends and family by checking in on one another and keeping your cell phone charged.

Opt in to receive safety text messages during the weekend by texting “SafeIU” to 77295. If you already receive IU Notify alerts, you do not need to opt in.

Check the local forecast before arrival to prepare for weather; you may need to pack a poncho or wear layers.

While attending events on campus, stay aware of your surroundings and plan for a safe ride home.

Slow down and watch for pedestrians, cyclists and scooters on the road. Don’t text and drive, and don’t drive under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.

Report suspicious or criminal activity by calling or texting 911, or submit a report online.
