Warning! This article includes spoilers for Invincible season 4 and the comics.

With each new season of Invincible, the villains Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) faces become more terrifyingly complex — and this will remain true in season 5. For four seasons, the series’ main antagonists have been the Viltrumites, but with them now living somewhat peacefully among humans, Mark will have to face someone new in the confirmed upcoming season. Given how powerful the Viltrumites are, it’s hard to imagine a villain who can hold a candle to their strength.

Following the battle with the Viltrumites, the young hero will continue to face villains like Powerplex (Aaron Paul) and Universa (Danai Gurira). According to the Invincible comic books by Robert Kirkman, Mark will soon also face Dinosaurus (Matthew Rhys), an antagonist who was introduced in season 4. However, what will happen with Dinosaurus is completely different from any story that has come before.

In the three-issue Death of Everyone event (and the prior comics), Mark comes to believe that villains are redeemable after he forgives Universa for her crimes. With that train of thought, he breaks Dinosaurus out of prison and teams up with him, disappointing Cecil (Walton Goggins), who warns him that the villain will never change.

At first, the team-up between Invincible and Dinosaurus seems to be working — until the latter resumes destroying cities and killing thousands of people with the belief that destroying half the population is the only way to save humanity from extinction. Eventually, Mark has to fight against the person he thought had become an ally.

Invincible Season 4’s Finale Marks The End Of A 5-Year Era

Invincible season 4’s finale ends on an ambiguous note, but one thing’s for certain: the episode marks the end of an era after five years.

Invincible is known for recycling its villains, and Dinosaurus will be no different. What will be interesting to see in the show’s next installment is how Mark will try to form a relationship with an antagonist, given that he wasn’t happy when Cecil hired D.A. Sinclair (Ezra Miller) to work for the GDA.

Among Invincible season 4’s villains, Dinosaurus doesn’t seem like much of a threat. After all, he’s a scientist who takes his belief that humans are destroying the world a little too far. The upcoming season of Invincible will have to showcase Dinosaurus’ strength and why he is worthy of becoming the main villain after Thragg.

Thragg And The Viltrumite Army Will Return In Invincible Season 5

At the end of Invincible season 4, Mark and Thragg (Lee Pace) agree to an uncomfortable truce. Thragg and the Viltrumites will stay on Earth and live among the humans, whom they plan to use for breeding to restore the Viltrumite population, which dwindled following the purge and the Scourge virus. While Mark has no choice in the matter and simply does what he thinks is right, the peace between him and the Viltrumite is unlikely to last.

Nolan (J.K. Simmons) also lived among humans with the same intentions as Thragg, and even he, a less powerful Viltrumite than the Grand Regent, couldn’t keep his worst instincts at bay. Being who he is, Thragg probably won’t lie low for long. The Viltrumite strongly believes in his race’s superiority, so his people living among a species they see as beneath them won’t keep him satisfied forever.

In an interview with ScreenRant’s Gant Hermanns, Thragg voice actor Lee Pace revealed that he would return for the show’s fifth season. However, it’s still unclear if the Viltrumites will attack Earth or will continue to bide their time until they replenish their population. The alien race can’t, of course, disappear, even if Mark is focused on other villains in the series. Ultimately, Thragg and the rest of the Viltrumite army are the main antagonists both in the show and the comic books, and everyone else is a distraction.

There’s one other possible Viltrumite-related storyline for Invincible season 5. In the Invincible comic books, Mark and the Viltrumite Anissa (Shantel VanSanten) have a child together after she sexually assaults him. That event, however, happens later in the comics, and not in the timeline depicted in the series. The Prime Video adaptation of the popular comic might speed up the story and include Anissa’s horrific actions in the fifth season, as the creators of the show have already made some significant changes to Invincible’s source material.
