In an interview with Collider, showrunner Eric Kripke may have spoiled a major character’s death before the series finale aired. Kripke was discussing his plans for Gen V season 3, as news of its cancellation after season 2 disappointed everyone, including the showrunner, who was stating that Starlight (played by Erin Moriarty) and her discussion with Marie Moreau (played by Jaz Sinclair) would be a major hint for another season. However, this slip-up could be a major spoiler for episode 8.
Like when Annie says to uh Marie like, “What good’s all that power if you can’t control it?” And when Marie says, “Reports of my awesomeness have been greatly exaggerated.” Like those are all hints of what we were planning to do for our season 3, our notion was like their story was not over just because Homelander’s dead.
There was a whole other interesting space that they occupy as young adults in this world. Like it’s not designed to feel like, well, I that story’s done. Like it wasn’t. We’re working hard to figure out a way to continue their stories.
In the original comics, Homelander (played by Antony Starr) does, in fact, die, but at the hands of Black Noir, who is revealed to be an unstable and even more powerful clone of Homelander in the White House. However, Prime Video’s adaptation has made some major changes to the source, meaning Homelander’s fate was still up for debate due to those changes, including Black Noir’s true identity being revealed and his fate already confirmed.
Kripke also states that they’re “working hard to figure out a way” to continue the stories of the characters in The Boys spinoff Gen V. The news of its cancellation with just two seasons under its belt was a heavy blow to fans of the franchise as the characters had been building up to what seemed to be something big, but so far it has not worked out that way due to Kripke writing the final season of The Boys as if there was more space to tell Marie and her friends’ story after the finale.
The showrunner’s statement also shows his disappointment with the news that Prime Video decided not to move forward with the kids of Godolkin, “While we wish we could keep the party going another season at Godolkin, we’re committed to continuing the Gen V characters’ stories in The Boys Season 5 and other VCU projects on the horizon. You’ll see them again.”
