Prices in Portugal rose by 1.9% during the month, well above the Eurozone average monthly increase of 1%. Among countries using the euro, only Malta and Cyprus recorded steeper rises.

The increase comes amid renewed pressure on energy and fuel prices, with ongoing tensions involving Iran contributing to volatility in international markets.

Portugal’s inflation rise was also significantly higher than that recorded in larger European economies such as Germany, where monthly inflation increased by 0.5%.

On an annual basis, inflation in Portugal climbed from 2.7% in March to 3.3% in April. Across the Eurozone, annual inflation rose from 2.6% to 3%.

The figures suggest Portuguese households and businesses faced stronger price pressures than many other countries in the single currency area during April.
