Lewis-Skelly opens up on new midfield role
Myles Lewis-Skelly has revealed he started training in midfield with Arsenal in December – and thinks his future now lies in that position.
The 19-year-old broke into the Gunners team last season as a left-back, but struggled for game time this campaign, with left-backs Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie preferred to him in defence.
However, Lewis-Skelly was surprisingly deployed in central midfield during Arsenal’s title run-in, starting there in the wins over Fulham, West Ham United and Crystal Palace.
Speaking on The Overlap podcast, the England international said: “I was training in midfield from around December to April, learning my craft, learning that position.
“I grew up playing in midfield, but it was just to refine the smaller details in that position in that team.
“It felt like, ‘this is where I belong’. It wasn’t like ‘what’s going on here?’. It felt very natural to me.”
Asked by Manchester United legend Gary Neville if he now sees himself as a midfield player, Lewis-Skelly replied: “I believe so.”
Arteta explains why he replaced Ramsdale with Raya
In Mikel Arteta’s six-and-a-half year Arsenal reign, one of his most controversial decisions was replacing goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale with David Raya at the start of the 2023/24 season.
Ramsdale had been a reliable No 1 for the Gunners, but Raya has since gone on to win the Golden Glove in each of his three campaigns with the club, keeping 48 Premier League clean sheets in total.
Asked on The Overlap about why he decided to switch goalkeepers, Arsenal’s title-winning manager Arteta said: “I was very convinced that we needed to make a change.
“Not because Aaron didn’t have the quality, but because I believed that to go to the next level, we needed a different profile of goalkeeper.
“I knew [Raya] was going to dedicate himself to the cause and be an incredible ambassador for the club.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal co-chairman Josh Kroenke praised how Arteta changed the club’s culture following his appointment in December 2019.
“When I sat with Mikel, he had all of his football tactics, but the conversation I really recall was about culture,” said Kroenke.
“When I see and I feel the people that are here, it’s testament to what Mikel and his staff have been able to do for the last six years, on and off the pitch.”
On the same podcast, Arteta and Kroenke presented Neville with a signed Arsenal shirt, with the words, ‘To Gary, our biggest supporter’, which the Man Utd legend said he will frame and hang in his house.

Premier League winner Schmeichel retires
Kasper Schmeichel, who won the Premier League with Leicester City in 2015/16, has announced his retirement due to a serious shoulder injury.
The 39-year-old goalkeeper has not played for his current club Celtic since February and was out of contract this summer.
Schmeichel initially injured his shoulder playing for Denmark in March 2025, but aggravated the problem with Celtic in February and would have required surgery.
In an emotional Instagram post, he wrote: “I’ve been a footballer since the day I was born. Accepting that my body may no longer allow me to do the thing I have loved more than anything is one of the hardest moments of my life.
“Ever since this injury happened, I believed that if there was even the smallest chance I could keep going, then I had to try. Now I have tried everything.”
Schmeichel – the son of legendary Man Utd goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel – made 284 Premier League appearances, keeping 82 clean sheets.
He made his Premier League debut in August 2007 with Manchester City, but is best known for his time at Leicester, where he won the title and FA Cup.
“I’ve been incredibly fortunate to experience unforgettable moments throughout my career,” added Schmeichel.
“Ten years ago, we won the Premier League with Leicester City. A miracle for the entire football world, and something I don’t think any of us who lived it will ever truly be able to explain.”
De Zerbi hailed for ‘extraordinary impact’
Tottenham Hotspur chief executive Vinai Venkatesham has praised the “extraordinary impact” of Roberto De Zerbi after the club avoided relegation on the final day of the season.
The Italian was appointed Spurs head coach on 31 March following the departure of Igor Tudor and went on to win three and draw two of his seven Premier League games in charge.
De Zerbi’s tally of 11 points was as many as Aston Villa and Liverpool – who both qualified for the UEFA Champions League – amassed in their last seven games, while Spurs ranked ninth in the Premier League for that period.
“I think he has made an extraordinary impact so far,” Venkatesham said in an interview with BBC Sport. “It’s hard to describe what a significant impact he has had in the dressing room with all the players.
“I think he’s an excellent coach, and we think that he plays the style of football that our supporters and the broader football public want to see.”
Venkatesham also said he expects Spurs to be busy in the transfer window this summer.
“We need to strengthen the club over multiple transfer windows but this transfer window, in particular, is going to be critical,” he added.
Man City chasing Anderson, Man Utd closing in on Ederson
Man City and Man Utd are both moving towards landing a new central midfielder, according to reports.
Man City are leading the race to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, according to the BBC, while Sky Sports have reported that Man Utd are closing in on Atalanta’s Ederson.
Anderson is preparing to play for England at the FIFA World Cup, which could impact any transfer.
He joined Forest from Newcastle United in 2024 and has played all but one of their Premier League games in the last two seasons, scoring six goals and recording 10 assists.
Man City are in the hunt for a central midfielder following the departure of Bernardo Silva.
Meanwhile, Man Utd need to replace the outgoing Casemiro and have made fellow Brazilian Ederson a top target.
Sky Sports report that talks are in the final stages over a fee for the 26-year-old and a full agreement could be reached by the end of the week.
Ederson, who was left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad, managed 59 tackles, 28 interceptions, and won possession in the defensive third of the pitch 62 times in Serie A this season, putting him in the top 15 across all categories in his position.
