Since its earliest days, Fred Hutch Cancer Center’s story has been closely tied to bone marrow transplantation. E. Donnall Thomas, MD, Fred Hutch’s first director of medical oncology, pioneered this approach, harnessing the power of the immune system to treat leukemia and other blood diseases.

On this episode of the Oncology Insights Podcast, host Petros Grivas, MD, PhD, FASCO, sits down with Marco Mielcarek, MD, PhD, director of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at Fred Hutch. Together, they discuss the changes Mielcarek has seen over a career spanning more than three decades, as well as the latest advancements that are making transplantation safer and more accessible for patients.

Mielcarek’s research focuses on graft-vs.-host disease, or GVHD, a potentially life-threatening complication in which newly transplanted cells attack the patient’s body. Mielcarek and his research colleagues are testing in clinical trials how to better prevent GVHD and how to effectively treat it without causing unwanted toxicity. They have shown that carefully timed infusions of high doses of cyclophosphamide, a common chemotherapy drug, can safely and effectively prevent GVHD after growth factor-mobilized blood stem transplantation.
