When right-wing Israeli figures want to speak to what they imagine as a sympathetic, and perhaps even influential, American audience, they often do so in the pages of The Wall Street Journal’s opinion section. It was noteworthy, then, that Avigdor Liberman, leader of the secular right-wing populist party Yisrael Beitenu and, in his own words, “a candidate for prime minister,” published an English-language op-ed earlier this week in which he laid out his position on the U.S.–Iran memorandum of understanding and the emerging contours of the deal – one to which, as Liberman observed with a combination of frustration and defiance, Israel is not a party.
