After introducing the sneaker this spring and selling out the first few releases, Nike is beginning to ramp up the volume on its newest expression of Air Max.
The Nike Air Liquid Max Triple Black features much of the same look as the Fragment collaboration that released in April, simply without the branding and with new upper pattern. Almost every element of the sneaker is rendered in black, including the upper’s mesh base, raised wave pattern and Swoosh. The Air units appear in an even darker black than the Fragment edition, and the only deviations in color arrive in the form of white branding on the insole and within the negative space created by the Air outsole.
Nike launched the Air Liquid Max tech on Air Max Day, and it uses point-loaded bubbles to offer cushioning only where its needed beneath a drop-in Cushlon midsole. Inspiration came from the toe pads of frogs, and the shoe’s launch colorway leaned into the theme further with a tonal green dot pattern invoking poison dart frogs.
“Air Max is as much about iterating and innovating as it is about consistently creating the future of Nike sportswear,” Andy Caine, vice president and creative director of Nike Sportswear,” said in a release upon the shoe’s unveiling. “The Air Liquid Max is a testament to Nike design excellence and tenacity — and a reminder that when we enhance and improve the Air experience, we also get to inspire Nike designers to deliver something entirely new.”
The few colorways of the Air Liquid Max that have released so far have all featured the same dotted upper, but this iteration along with another dubbed Black Metallic instead switch to a series of striped waves that run 360 degrees around the sneaker. A third, previously unreported variant will also come in greyscale with the same wavy treatment.
The Nike Air Liquid Max Triple Black doesn’t yet have a confirmed release date but should come relatively soon through the Snkrs app and select third-party retailers. Pricing is set at $220.
