Who did the celebration first? We look at the signature move that has gone global
Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers both perform the ‘cold’ celebration, where they cross their arms and rub their hands down their biceps, as if shivering from the cold.
Chelsea playmaker Palmer unveiled it after scoring his first of two goals in a 3-2 win at Luton Town in December 2023.
He explained that the celebration was a nod to his former Manchester City academy team-mate Rogers, who debuted it a week earlier after scoring the winner for Middlesbrough in a EFL Championship match against West Bromwich Albion.
“My boy Morgz did one for Middlesbrough, so I told him I’d do it too if I scored,” said Palmer.
“It symbolises joy, passion and hard determination for the game, plus it’s funny as it works well with my name.”
Rogers later said: “Yeah, he definitely copied me. It’s my celebration. Check the timeline, I did it first.”
However, the celebration appears to have originated in the United States, with four-time NBA All-Star Trae Young – nicknamed ‘Ice Trae’ – performing it since he first broke through with Atlanta Hawks in 2018.
