A strange claim has appeared on the internet which argues that Britain never actually ruled India. The post, shared on X, drew attention because of its unusual reasoning and the involvement of Elon Musk who liked the post that amplified its reach.
The post stated, “If Indians set foot in England and become English, then the English who set foot in India become Indian. Therefore, the English did not rule India. There is no such thing as ‘colonisation.’”
The Tesla CEO not only liked the post but also shared it with a “thinking face” emoji which brought it under the scrutiny of millions of users.
Elon Musk’s Reaction Sparks A Storm Of Replies
Musk’s engagement with the post immediately triggered heated discussions online. Many users in India expressed their disagreement and pointed out historical facts to counter the claim.
One user wrote a detailed rebuttal: “Indians aren’t looting England’s resources. Indians aren’t torturing British citizens. Indians aren’t triggering famines like Bengal (1943). Indians aren’t enslaving British people. Indians aren’t massacring Brits like Jallianwala Bagh (1919). Indians aren’t imposing oppressive taxes like the British salt tax.
Indians aren’t destroying British industries like the Indian textile trade. Indians aren’t deporting Brits to brutal prisons like Cellular Jail. Indians aren’t enacting laws like the Rowlatt Act to suppress British rights. Indians aren’t causing mass displacement or violence like the Partition (1947).”
Another explained, “He’s wrong because migration isn’t colonisation. Indians in England didn’t rule England…they just lived there. The English in India controlled the land, laws, and wealth by force. Colonisation is about domination, not identity.”
A person said, “There’s a big difference between someone legally joining Tesla with proper documents and someone invading, overthrowing you and declaring they’ll run the company.”
“Never expected that even Elon Musk would have to think about this lame logic. If only the British had truly stayed in India, earning here, spending here, instead of working/looting and sending remittances/resources/money to the UK. Many foreign invaders came to India and eventually settled, blending into local culture. The British didn’t, they stayed separate and never became part of Indian society,” an individual argued.
“Oh! So now you don’t care about the difference between illegal invasion and legal immigration with visas? Interesting. Thought you were sharply against illegal immigration, maybe we’re mistaken,” read another comment.
Some users even used humour to highlight the absurdity of the argument with one joking, “A thief broke into my house last night. He’s our newest family member now.”
Someone asked, “I’ve been to the USA, Canada, Germany, Belgium and other countries. Am I from all of them now?” and another added, “I’ve been to Jamaica… Am I Jamaican?”
Another Controversial Take From Elon Musk
Last year, Musk sparked controversy by claiming that the British Empire “ended global slavery,” a statement that drew sharp criticism from many including users in India.
