In a matter of days, Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan will be back in theaters with what could be his most ambitious project ever, The Odyssey. Recreating the classic Homer poem in a massive live-action movie, Nolan brings together one of the most star-studded casts in recent memory to show Odysseus’ 10-year journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Early reactions have been overwhelmingly positive ahead of the film’s Jul. 17 premiere, as stars like Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, and more prepare to dive into one of the most epic fictional stories in history.
This movie is expected to add yet another win to Nolan’s resume, which was recently boosted by his first Oscar win for 2023’s Oppenheimer (seven Oscar wins overall, including Best Director). Combine that with rave reviews for movies like Inception, Interstellar, Tenet, and The Dark Knight trilogy, and Nolan has built one of the most impressive resumes of any director in the 21st century. Now, while he waits patiently to deliver The Odyssey to eager fans, he has also revealed plans for one of his most underrated movies to come back into the spotlight.
Speaking with Fred Asquith, director Christopher Nolan revealed plans to re-release The Prestige in theaters in Jan. 2027. Nolan reflected on his directing style on that movie compared to his work on The Odyssey, looking back on his early work with IMAX cameras before confirming The Prestige’s return to the big screen early next year.
The Prestige is the fifth of Nolan’s 14 movies (including The Odyssey), which was released between the first two chapters of his Batman trilogy in 2006. Set in 19th-century London, the movie follows a heated rivalry between two magicians, one of whose wives dies tragically in a water-tank trick that went wrong. The plot also features a dangerous cloning machine, built by real-world technological innovator Nikola Tesla, to help with the ultimate teleportation trick. The movie stars comic-book movie legends Hugh Jackman (Deadpool & Wolverine) and Christian Bale (The Dark Knight) as Lord Caldlow and Alfred Borden, respectively, alongside supporting stars like Scarlett Johansson, Michael Caine, Andy Serkis, and the late David Bowie.
The Prestige was nominated for two Oscars (Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction), but it grossed just under $110 million worldwide, the third-lowest total of Nolan’s career. Considering Nolan’s incredible success since that movie, the re-release will certainly bring plenty of new eyes to one of his earlier movies, which still has a 77% Tomatometer score and 92% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes (percentage of reviews that were positive). While Nolan does not have any new confirmed releases after The Odyssey, his return to theaters with The Prestige will certainly kick off an exciting run in theaters in early 2027.
