The cassette comeback has a new champion. We Are Rewind, the brand behind the modern revival of the tape deck, has announced a collaboration with Pink Floyd, pairing their flagship WE-001 cassette player with an exclusive edition of ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ on cassette.

The album is one of the most popular cassette releases of all time, and this version has been specially remastered as part of the limited edition pack. This cassette is exclusive to the box set, and it marks the only cassette version of the album’s 50th anniversary remaster available anywhere.

This isn’t We Are Rewind’s first collaboration with artists tied to cassette culture. The brand has already put out the Curtis boombox and the Freddie headphones alongside the success of the original WE-001 player, building a growing lineup of gear that bridges vintage format and modern design.

The player itself has been optimised for 2026 listening, with true hi-fi sound and a headphone amplifier built specifically with cassette playback in mind. It comes in an aluminium build with metal buttons, Bluetooth connectivity for pairing with modern headphones and speakers, and a rechargeable battery rated for 12 hours of playback. A dedicated belt clip is also available for anyone chasing the full retro look.

Key specs on the player include Bluetooth 5.1 for wireless listening, forward and rewind controls, a 3.5 mm headphone output, and line-in recording for making mixtapes or voice recordings with a compatible mic. The frequency response has been upgraded to a range of 30 Hz to 14,500 Hz, plus or minus 3 dB, for cleaner, more accurate sound reproduction.

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason shared his own excitement over the release. “I still have enormous affection for the cassette,” he says. “It really was a major breakthrough, not only with the Sony Walkman but with some of the more up-market recorders. I still have my Nakamichi on the shelf and look forward to testing it with the new The Dark Side of the Moon cassette.”

He added a playful nod to what might come next: “Am I correct in assuming that the next major issue will be The Dark Side of the Moon in a large package consisting of the album divided up into 78 RPM discs?”

We Are Rewind founder and CEO Romain Boudruche spoke to why the album made sense as a partner for the release. “To call The Dark Side of the Moon a classic album is an understatement,” he says. “In many ways, it set the tone for what an album experience should be as a continuous piece of sonic art but also used state-of-the-art production techniques and sounds which make it a true musical experience. We’re happy that We Are Rewind can play a part in helping preserve the physical album experience.”

The timing lines up with a broader shift back toward physical formats. Cassette tape sales in the US are up 17.5 percent year on year, excluding used tape sales, while the UK has seen a 53 percent increase after a full decade of consistent growth.
