Lahiru Milantha completed one run but was run out while attempting a second, sealing a dramatic one-run victory.
Earlier, Sunil Narine had dismantled Freedom’s top order with a superb spell of 3/13. The West Indian spinner dismissed Mitchell Owen, Rachin Ravindra and captain Steven Smith as Freedom slipped to 29/3 inside five overs.
Andries Gous and Nikhil Chaudhary revived the chase with a 65-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Gous made 40 from 35 balls, while Chaudhary contributed 25 off 24.
Jason Holder then tilted the contest back in the Knight Riders’ favour. The captain dismissed Chaudhary and Ben Dwarshuis in the 14th over before removing Gous to leave Freedom 109/6 in the 16th.
Pienaar launched the late fightback, hitting three fours and five sixes and taking Freedom to within eight runs of victory before van Schalkwyk’s decisive intervention.
The Knight Riders had earlier been bowled out for 164 in 19.4 overs after being asked to bat.
Andre Fletcher and Colin Munro provided a strong start, adding 66 runs for the opening wicket in 7.3 overs. Fletcher struck 47 from 27 balls, including seven fours and a six, while Munro hit four sixes in his 40 off 29.
Nikhil Chaudhary changed the momentum by dismissing Fletcher and Andre Russell in the space of three deliveries, with Russell bowled for a duck by a sharply turning leg-break.
Munro counterattacked with three successive sixes off Chaudhary but was dismissed by Rachin Ravindra in the 12th over. Ravindra then bowled Narine two balls later as the Knight Riders slipped from 109/2 to 111/4.
Matthew Tromp kept the innings moving with a rapid 39 from 21 balls, striking three fours and three sixes. However, the middle and lower order batters struggled to build around him.
Ben Dwarshuis finished with 3/31, while Ravindra, Chaudhary and Mitchell Owen claimed two wickets each as the Knight Riders lost their final eight wickets for 98 runs.
Their total proved just enough as Narine, Holder and van Schalkwyk combined to complete a remarkable defence and secure the MLC 2026 title for Los Angeles Knight Riders.
