Tom Cruise is ready to remind Nicole Kidman of how their romance began.
The 64-year-old’s next project is a sequel to Days of Thunder, the 1990 racecar driving action movie where he and the Aussie actress, 59, first met during her audition.
“Tom wants it to happen,” a source tells the Enquirer. “Is there room for Nicole Kidman to show up in Days of Thunder 2? Yes, and in terms of dealmaking, it’s not a difficult path” for her character, who played his doctor and love interest, to appear in the sequel.
“But the ball is in Nicole’s, and only Nicole’s, court,” the source adds, pointing out that she has been making a concerted effort to work with female directors.
The Hollywood Reporter announced in a July 22 story that Jonathan Levine — who directed the Seth Rogen comedies The Night Before and The Long Shot — is in talks to direct.
“It’s a big leap for Nicole to jump onto a ‘bro movie’ like Days of Thunder 2 for a male director from the universe of frat boy comedies,” says the source. “Even if she’s just going to do a signature, one-scene cameo, it has to be creatively perfect for her to do it.”

A lot has changed for the Oscar winner since she worked on the first film, which was her Hollywood debut. She and Cruise wed the year the movie came out and stayed together until 2001.
“Nicole is a powerful, big-time producer in her own right, and nobody can strong-arm her into a job she doesn’t want to do,” acknowledges the source.
Even long after her divorce from the A-lister — and her remarriage and recent divorce from Keith Urban after nearly 20 years — she still has fond memories of the experience.
“I remember walking in, I remember being so nervous and seeing Tom Cruise drive up in a Porsche, I think it was. He got out of the car and walked through and I was like, ‘Ah.’ My jaw dropped,” the Practical Magic 2 star said on The Jess Cagle Interview podcast in 2016 (via People).
Kidman went on to admit she was shocked to learn she got the job, adding, “You know, obviously, [the movie] changed my life extraordinarily. So grateful for the film, for everything that came with it. It was a big, important part of my life.”
There’s still a chance she could revisit that time of her life alongside her ex in the sequel. “She hasn’t officially passed yet,” says the source, “and the whole Days of Thunder team makes more money if she agrees to appear, even briefly, in this film.”
