Shadow of Light sits within Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats

 

Shadow of Light is a site-specific land art installation by Gregory Orekhov, created in 2026 at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA. Set against the seemingly endless white surface of the salt flats, a black square made of light-absorbing fabric appears as a foreign presence. Its austere geometry stands in contrast to the natural texture of the salt, while its abyssal blackness opposes the intense light and near-absolute whiteness of the surrounding landscape.

A minimal intervention transforms the perception of the entire landscape. The black square disrupts the continuity of the space, remaining the only artificial element within an almost boundless white field. The installation by artist Gregory Orekhov introduces a precise geometric intervention into a boundless setting.
