Wiki World sets Red Submarine Cabin in the forest
Red Submarine Cabin is a modular cabin product designed by Wiki World as a spatial system for remote landscapes in China. Developed around Wiki World’s Digital Wood technology, the cabin combines digital fabrication with a compact, prefabricated construction system. Conceived as a high-performance, zero-footprint, plug-and-play dwelling, it can accommodate different materials and functions while adapting to a range of landscapes. The cabin takes the form of a small red wooden structure, using the visual language of a submarine as a reference for its architecture. Measuring just over 20 sqm, the interior contains a living room with an expansive picture window, a climbing ladder leading to a loft, and a sleeping area positioned beneath a large skylight. Circular portholes reinforce the submarine concept while providing additional framed views of the surrounding landscape. The project takes conceptual inspiration from Fitzcarraldo, the 1982 film by German director Werner Herzog, particularly its depiction of a protagonist who attempts to transport a steamship over a hill and into the Amazon rainforest. The cabin translates this surreal relationship between vessel and wilderness into a small-scale dwelling positioned within the forest.

A timber cabin shaped by the language of a submarine
The submarine reference extends from the exterior appearance into the cabin’s spatial details. Circular windows function as portholes, while panoramic viewfinders frame the surrounding vegetation and changing patterns of daylight. Within the forest, the relationship between the cabin and its setting becomes part of the spatial experience. Wind, trees, leaves, sunlight, and shadows form a constantly changing backdrop to the compact interior. The cabin’s windows establish framed connections with the woodland, while the loft and skylight provide different positions from which to observe the surroundings. The compact scale concentrates domestic functions within a limited footprint. The living room, loft, sleeping area, windows, and circulation are arranged as components of a small spatial system designed for occupation within the forest.
Wiki World’s architects describe the Red Submarine Cabin as part of the studio’s ongoing exploration of natural construction and the relationship between living behavior and the environment. The project questions conventional assumptions about the size required for a home, using a compact footprint to bring occupants into closer contact with materials and the surrounding landscape. The reduced scale also allows everyday activities to become closely connected with the woodland setting. The terrace extends the living environment outdoors, maintaining a direct relationship with the existing ground, vegetation, and seasonal changes.
Digital fabrication and prefabricated timber construction
The entire structure uses glued timber, with each custom-shaped component and joint digitally designed and fabricated. The system achieves 100 percent prefabricated assembly, allowing the cabin to be produced as a coordinated set of customized structural elements. Digital Wood technology forms the basis of this construction approach, combining the precision of digital fabrication with a timber structural system. Customization is applied not only to the individual components but also to their joints, allowing the structure to be assembled from prefabricated parts. The approach forms part of Wiki World’s broader concept of the “Playtime Cabin,” which considers the dwelling as a customizable environment shaped around different understandings of domestic life.
The cabin is designed to minimize intervention on its site. Existing trees and bamboo are retained, preserving the original woodland and the textures of the paths. The houses are entirely elevated, separating the structures from the ground and allowing the existing landscape to remain largely continuous beneath them. This elevated construction forms part of the project’s zero-footprint approach, reducing the need to alter the existing woodland while positioning the cabin directly within the forest. Through its combination of prefabricated timber construction, digital fabrication, compact planning, and elevated placement, the Red Submarine Cabin establishes a modular dwelling system that can be inserted into natural settings while maintaining the existing character of the site.
