28 years after the release of the first film, its sequel, Practical Magic 2, is set for release in 2026. Regarding the significant gap between the two films, star Nicole Kidman had a few things to say about the matter.
Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Nicole Kidman revealed that Practical Magic’s journey to the sequel was unusual by Hollywood standards. She said, “It was just one of those things that never happens in the film industry, where films usually kind of come out, and if they’re not huge successes, they die. But this one found its audience through, I think, social media and people, you know, the witches out there.”
How fan demand helped bring the Practical Magic cast back together
In Hollywood, often it is just simple economics. When something has demand that can translate into revenue, the industry usually obliges, despite critical acclaim. However, with the advent of social media, the way in which fans consume movies has changed, so clips from older films, ones that did not have the privilege of social media promotion, have also been getting bumped up for a younger audience.
Kidman said as much in her interview with Fallon. Finding an audience years after its release incentivized studios to think about a sequel, leading to its theatrical release.
The film brings back Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock as the Owens sisters, while adding a bunch of other cast members. Newcomers to the franchise include Maisie Williams, Joey King, Lee Pace, and Xolo Maridueña. On the other hand, returning cast members include Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing.
The sequel is based on Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel The Book of Magic, which continues the story from the original Practical Magic. The first novel was released in 1995, based on which the first Practical Magic movie was released in 1998.
