Piers Morgan is threatening to sue Earl Charles Spencer over what he calls the “demonstrable lies” Princess Diana’s brother wrote about him in his upcoming book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.
“BREAKING: I am taking legal action against Earl Spencer and his publishers over demonstrable lies he has written about me in his new book, which call into question his credibility as a supposed ‘historian,'” the journalist shared to X on September 21, before elaborating further about his issues with the memoir on Piers Morgan Uncensored.
The broadcaster claimed the book contains “fabricated inaccuracies” that call into question Spencer’s credibility. Those inaccuracies, he said, stem from an account Spencer allegedly gave about personally uninviting the editors of a number of U.K. tabloids from attending Diana’s funeral.
While Spencer’s book isn’t out until September 22, the host read a number of apparent excerpts from it on his program.
“He says they realized they were unable to be rude to the brother of the much-mourned princess,” Morgan read to his viewers. “The only one who sounded surly as opposed to merely confused or embarrassed was Piers Morgan of the Mirror, who snarled with annoyance before he hung up.”
“I assumed Morgan must be feeling particular guilt because, four years earlier, he and his Sunday Mirror counterpart had published photographs taken with hidden cameras by a gym owner,” Spencer’s alleged account continued, claiming photos of Princess Diana in a leotard wound up being very costly for the publication.

“Pretty damning, particularly about me. There’s just one problem. It’s all [expletive],” Morgan insisted, saying the photographs in question were published in 1993, two years before he began working for the Daily Mirror.
“At the time of the gym pictures, I was doing a showbiz column on the Mirror’s arch rival, The Sun,” he continued, before claiming that he was “probably talking to” Diana more than her own brother was around the time of her death.
“My question, though, is this: if Earl Spencer can be so incredibly, defamatory wrong about basic facts involving me, why should we believe anything else he puts in this book?” Morgan pressed, before issuing another threat to the writer.
“You’ll be hearing and your publishers, from my lawyers. Because I would like the complete lie that you published about me and those photographs to be removed from your book,” he vowed.

The British reporter isn’t the only one pushing back against claims in the book, after Spencer also said the then-Prince Charles sounded “giddily elated” and “like a lottery winner” after Diana’s death, which occurred a year after the pair finalized their divorce. Spencer also claimed Charles said she would be forgotten after her death.
Buckingham Palace issued a rare statement in response, telling NBC News, “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory in ways others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss.”
