One of the great TV inventions of the 2020s is Jennifer Hudson’s Spirit Tunnel. Celebrities hoping to promote their projects on The Jennifer Hudson Show must first pass through a hallway lined with producers singing and clapping at them. Many stars have had a good time in the Spirit Tunnel (others have opted out entirely due to dancing-related anxiety), but it would be hard to determine who’s had the most fun in there. That is, until today. Today it became obvious that no one has ever had a better time in the Spirit Tunnel than Tom Cruise.
Cruise, who’s currently on a baffling press run to promote Digger, got a Risky Business–themed Spirit Tunnel. Jennifer Hudson Show staffers (and at least one actual child) all wore sunglasses and sang a version of “Old Time Rock and Roll” that went, “We got that Tom Cruise rock and roll.” No notes. Cruise put on his own sunglasses and showed off his best dance moves, which were, admittedly, pretty good. You can tell he was having fun for real because he spent most of his Spirit Tunnel time with his back to the camera in order to dance with Hudson’s employees. And that’s saying a lot, considering he spent way more time in there than most people do.
There will probably never be a better Spirit Tunnel than this one. It’s so packed; Cruise is so game; and it is so funny that he’s doing it for Digger, a movie that was recently described as “like being trapped inside a tuba for two hours.” I think Hudson should consider packing up her signature shtick after Cruise’s performance. How could it ever be topped?
