Huawei has launched the MatePad Air Z in China, and although it looks like a minor addition to a crowded tablet line, it is the first Huawei tablet to ship with HarmonyOS 7, which means the company’s newest software is arriving on one of its cheaper models rather than on a flagship. The Air Z went on sale on 29 September after a five-day pre-sale, and it comes in a Standard version and a cheaper Enjoy Edition, both built around a 12-inch 144Hz screen and a 10,100mAh battery.

The catch is that the Air Z is not simply a new MatePad Air, because it sits underneath the MatePad Air (2026) that Huawei launched in China earlier this month with an OLED panel, and the gap between the two shows exactly where Huawei saved money.

The Standard and Enjoy Edition models use a Kirin T93SD chip, while the PaperMatte versions, which add Huawei’s anti-glare screen treatment, use a Kirin T93S, according to a footnote on Huawei’s product page. Every version has a 12-inch LCD with a 2,800 x 1,840 resolution, a 144Hz refresh rate and an 88% screen-to-body ratio, and IT Home lists the body at 5.9mm thick and about 555g. There is an 8MP camera on the front and a 50MP camera on the back, although only the Standard version gets an LED flash, and the Standard version also ships with a 66W charger while the Enjoy Edition comes with a 40W one.

Chinese tablet pricing is layered, and the Air Z is a good example of why a single headline number can mislead. The list prices reported by Huawei Central start at ¥2,999 for the Enjoy Edition with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while a ¥200 launch discount brings every variant down by the same amount.

On top of that, buyers who qualify for China’s national consumer subsidy pay even less, and 17173 reports that the entry Enjoy Edition falls to ¥2,380 after the subsidy while the entry Standard model drops to ¥2,999. The same report says the launch pricing runs until 31 October and that teachers get a further ¥150 off.

What the MatePad Air Z offers

What you give up compared with the MatePad Air (2026)

The more useful comparison is with Huawei’s own MatePad Air (2026), which went on sale in China at ¥4,499 earlier in September. At list price, the Air Z’s cheapest configuration is therefore ¥1,500 less, and a post on the Chinese deals site SMZDM lays out where that money went: the Air (2026) uses an OLED panel with a peak brightness of 1,200 nits on the standard version, and it is thinner and lighter at 5.3mm and 509g, while the Air Z uses LCD, tops out at 900 nits and gains 0.6mm and roughly 46g.

For students taking notes under classroom lighting those are reasonable trade-offs, because the matte screen option matters more there than contrast, and the battery, screen size and refresh rate match the pricier model. Anyone who mostly watches video in the dark will find the OLED on the MatePad Air noticeably better, though, and once subsidies shrink the price gap the two are worth comparing directly. Buyers outside China have fewer options, since the MatePad Pro 12 (2026) is so far the Huawei tablet that has gone global.
