During this week’s episode of “Survivor,” a contestant was bitten by a highly venomous snake while on the beaches of Fiji, forcing medical personnel to bring him by boat to get treated.

A sea krait bit the right foot of Jake Latimer, 36, while he was sitting on the shore of his camp. The show’s medical team quickly evacuated him from the island to a base camp to be examined by doctors. Latimer was visibly shaken and nervous about the incident and kept telling the nurses nothing can happen to him as he has a baby on the way, back at home.

The universe must have been on Latimer’s side because the snake didn’t inject any poison with its bite. If it had, host Jeff Probst called that the worst case scenario. The Canadian correctional officer was able to be stabilized after receiving fluids but a doctor said it was not safe for Latimer to return to the grueling game of “Survivor.”

“Jake is obviously emotionally upset, as anybody would be. But [we] felt like we should bring you inside this so you really know what’s happening and can see that we are absolutely focused on taking care of it,” Probst told viewers. “We’ve never had anything like this happen.”

Upon starting this week’s immunity challenge, Probst shared the news to all three tribes that Jake would not be returning to compete, leaving his tribe down to only three people.

Later in the show, prior to a commercial break, a photo of Latimer with his newborn baby was shared with a message saying he returned home in time to see the birth of his child.

“Survivor” airs every Wednesday at 8pm on CBS.
