As timber architecture moves beyond traditional residential and rural settings to find new applications in urban regeneration, commercial spaces, public activities, and everyday life, we face new challenges and a growing need for “new architecture” that continues to evolve.
The second GoodOne Future Timber Architecture Design Competition aims to explore these questions further. Jointly initiated by Hefei Jiuwucang Architectural Assembly Technology Co., Ltd., Z/S Studio, and Luxelakes A8 Design Center, this year’s competition takes “A Fantastical Journey Within” as its theme and invites architects, designers, and creative practitioners from around the world and across disciplines to participate.
Registration is still open until October 23, 2026, at 12:00 noon (see the end of this article for registration details). We interviewed the competition’s three lead judges: Liu Jiakun, founder and principal architect of Jiakun Architects; Dong Gong, founder and design principal of Vector Architects and a foreign member of the French Academy of Architecture; and Luo Yujie, founder of LUO studio. Drawing on their respective design experiences, they share their perspectives on bamboo and timber, small-scale architecture, public space, construction principles, and long-term building operations.
