Quick Read
UNI surged 121% in two months before CME’s announcement, making a 21% ‘sell the news’ drop inevitable as early buyers locked in profits.
CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost confirmed UNI entered a distribution phase, with rising Binance inflows showing holders selling tokens ahead of the October 19 launch.
The CME futures launch may deepen UNI’s slide by enabling short-selling; $6.74 is the key support level and $9.08 signals new buyer interest.

The CME Group (NASDAQ:CME), a major Chicago derivatives exchange, is planning to list Uniswap futures on October 19, 2026. Despite the announcement, Uniswap’s price (CRYPTO:UNI) has fallen 20.8% in the two weeks to October 17. Currently, each standard futures contract will represent 10,000 UNI, valued at about $72,500 based on current prices, but the launch is still pending regulatory review.
A futures contract is essentially an agreement to buy or sell an asset at a predetermined price on a future date. The CME listing offers large institutions a regulated way to trade UNI. However, UNI is trading at $7.25 as of October 18, about 34% below its high of $10.93 on September 23. This raises the question: Why is the token declining just as Wall Street prepares to enter the market?

When the CME announced the Uniswap futures on September 22, UNI jumped 13.7% that day, climbing from an opening price of $8.99 to a closing price of $10.22. This increase created a classic “buy the rumor, sell the news” scenario, where investors rushed in to capitalize on the anticipated launch and then sold to realize profits. With the CME launch approaching on October 19, many traders who bought in September have already exited.

On-chain data supports this trend. CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost noted in a report dated October 17 that UNI appears to be in a distribution phase, suggesting holders are moving tokens to exchanges to sell. Rising exchange inflows support this view, reflecting tokens moving from private wallets to trading platforms like Binance.
UNI inflows on Binance peaked in late September but have since slowed. Darkfost said this reduction in inflows could suggest a potential bottom in price. Despite this, UNI continued to decline on October 17, even as selling on Binance eased, indicating that buyers have not yet stepped in to absorb the selling pressure.

UNI Broke Down in Early October, but Buyers Held Near $6.74 Arsenii Palivoda / Shutterstock.com
UNI fell 21.6%, dropping from $9.08 on October 5 to $7.12 by October 8. Trading volume on October 7 and 8 was the highest of the month, suggesting strong selling pressure contributed to the breakdown.
Since then, buyers have defended a key price level. UNI touched lows of $6.74 on October 13 and $6.78 on October 15, but closed above both. In contrast, the largest trading volume this month occurred on September 18 during the price rally, while October volume has been relatively lower.
UNI Ran Further Than Bitcoin and Ethereum, So It Had Further to Fall Saulich Elena / Shutterstock.com
Compared with major cryptocurrencies, UNI has not performed as well over the past month. From September 17 to October 17, UNI dropped 6.3%, while Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) gained 6.8%, Solana (CRYPTO:SOL) rose 2.7%, and Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) fell just 1.1%. Over the week leading up to October 18, UNI’s 4.5% decline falls between Solana’s 5.2% drop and Ethereum’s 3.6% fall, while Bitcoin fell only 1.4%.
UNI’s weakness can largely be attributed to its recent gains. UNI surged 121.5% over the two months leading up to October 17, while Bitcoin and Ethereum rose by about 26% each and Solana gained 35.5%. A token that rises so sharply often prompts holders to lock in profits, which can increase selling. Furthermore, UNI’s market size is considerably smaller than Bitcoin’s, meaning that even a small wave of selling can have a larger impact on its price.
Will CME’s Uniswap Futures Halt UNI’s Decline?
The futures launch is unlikely to reverse UNI’s decline immediately. The September price rally likely priced in the upcoming listing, and regulatory approval delays may push back the timeline. Additionally, futures contracts will let traders open short positions—investments that profit when prices fall—without borrowing UNI. While hedging could provide some price support, futures launches typically start with minimal trading volume; for example, Ethereum futures attracted only 388 contracts on their first day at CME in February 2021.
So far, the CME announcement has created a “sell-the-news” effect for UNI, and it is unlikely to change quickly. If UNI closes below the $6.74 low from October 13 after the contracts go live, it suggests that selling pressure remains strong. Conversely, if UNI closes above $9.08—the October 5 price—it could indicate that new buyers are stepping in to replace sellers.
