Smart hospitals are transforming the health care landscape by leveraging cutting-edge technologies to rethink and optimize how care is delivered. These hospitals go beyond traditional models of care by integrating advanced digital solutions, such as artificial intelligence, telemedicine, robotics, and data analytics, into clinical workflows and hospital operations. The adoption of such technologies not only improves treatment outcomes and operational efficiency within hospitals but also contributes to broader health care goals, including prevention, population health management, and enhanced quality of life.
To promote transparency and acknowledge hospitals leading the way in digital transformation, Statista and Newsweek have partnered once again to present the World’s Best Smart Hospitals 2027 ranking. This sixth edition recognizes the 410 leading World’s Best Smart Hospitals worldwide. This year’s ranking features hospitals from 33 countries and highlights standout categories in specific areas of digital innovation.
The ranking is based on three pillars:
1. International online survey: Hospital managers and health care professionals with expertise about smart hospitals were asked to recommend leading smart hospitals across the globe.
2. Statista Smart Hospitals Digital Maturity Survey: Implementation and usage of digital technologies in the hospital was assessed by hospitals and validated by Chief Digital/Information Officers or other members of senior management with responsibility for digital transformation.
3. Digital health care-related accreditations: Several national and international accreditations, relating to the concept of smart hospitals, were included in the scoring model.

Scoring Model
Reputation Score (67.5%)Statista Smart Hospitals Digital Maturity Survey (30%)Digital Healthcare-Related Accreditations and Certifications (2.5%)
There are two subcomponents within the peer recommendations: international and national recommendations. International recommendations from medical professionals received a higher weight of 39% toward the overall score, reinforcing the international focus of this ranking, while national recommendations accounted for 28.5%. Recommendation data from the previous two survey years was also incorporated with lower weights to reflect reputational continuity. Recommendations were weighted by participants’ professional experience, and self-recommendations were not permitted.
International Hospital Survey
During the survey period from May to June 2026, Statista invited medical professionals with knowledge about smart hospitals to participate in an online survey in cooperation with Newsweek. Participants were invited via email, and the survey was also promoted on newsweek.com. Recommendations for one’s own employer or hospital were not allowed. A score was calculated for each hospital based on the number of weighted recommendations, considering participants’ professional experience. Recommendation data from the previous two survey years was also incorporated with lower weights.
Additionally, participants could identify a standout category for each recommended hospital: Artificial Intelligence, Patient Support Technologies, Robotics & Automation, and Telemedicine & Remote Care.
Statista Smart Hospitals Digital Maturity Survey
Hospitals were invited to participate in the Statista Smart Hospitals Digital Maturity Survey (SSHDMS), which assesses the implementation of digital technologies and the overall digital maturity of health care institutions. For this cycle, the questionnaire was updated based on feedback from Statista’s Expert Board and international health care professionals and covered seven domains: Digital Information Systems, Digital Infrastructure, Training and Feedback, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Automation, Governance and Accreditation, and Evaluation and Auditing.
Participating hospitals were required to submit supporting evidence where applicable, and responses had to be certified by a member of senior management (e.g., CEO or CIO). Based on the validated responses, hospitals received a digital maturity score and were awarded between one and five ribbons reflecting their level of digital maturity. The survey methodology and ribbon system were substantially revised for the 2027 ranking, including expanded assessment criteria, stricter evidence requirements, and the introduction of a five-ribbon scale.
Participation in the SSHDMS was voluntary. Hospitals that did not participate received a standardized base score for this pillar in the overall evaluation.
Future survey cycles will be announced on newsweek.com and via email to pre-registered participants. Pre-registration for future cycles is available here.
Digital Healthcare-Related Accreditations and Certifications
Digital healthcare-related accreditations and certifications were incorporated into the ranking to recognize hospitals that demonstrate commitment to internationally recognized standards in digital health care and technology-enabled clinical excellence. The following accreditations contributed to the evaluation:
ARIS Centre of Excellence in Robotic Surgery NHS Global Digital Exemplar Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery
The methodology also included the following certifications:
Joint Commission International (JCI) Telehealth Certification Joint Commission Responsible Use of Health Data (RUHD) Certification NCQA Virtual Care Delivery Accreditation
Hospitals received a score based on the verified attainment of eligible accreditations and certifications, with higher scores awarded to hospitals holding a greater number of recognized credentials. To avoid double counting, accreditations reported and validated through the Statista Smart Hospitals Digital Maturity Survey were excluded from this pillar.
Leader in AI Innovation
Leader in AI Innovation distinction was introduced for the 2027 edition to recognize hospitals demonstrating excellence in the implementation, strategic adoption, and responsible use of artificial intelligence. To qualify, hospitals had to score at or above the 70th percentile in both the AI Standout Pillar and the AI Maturity Pillar. The AI Standout Pillar combines peer recognition with voluntary AI Excellence nominations, while the AI Maturity Pillar is based on the artificial intelligence section of the SSHDMS. Hospitals meeting these criteria are identified with a checkmark in the published ranking.
Global board of medical experts
A global board of renowned experts provides guidance for the methodology of the ranking:

Ranking Disclaimer
The Smart Hospitals ranking reflects a rapidly evolving field in which standardized global performance indicators and universally established benchmarks are still developing. As no globally standardized set of Smart Hospital KPIs currently exists, this year’s assessment places particular emphasis on hospitals’ digital and technological maturity, including their capabilities, implementation approaches, and strategic adoption of smart hospital solutions. This assessment is based on the Statista Smart Hospitals Digital Maturity Survey, a voluntary survey based on self-reported data provided by participating hospitals.
As a result, changes in ranking positions may be more pronounced compared with rankings in more established fields, particularly when driven by updated maturity assessments, survey responses, or newly available data. These changes reflect the evolving understanding and measurement of smart hospital maturity and should be interpreted in the context of this assessment approach.
