Sure, Sebastian Stan has his hands full lately while trying to double-dip as both Bucky Barnes a.k.a. The Winter Soldier for Marvel Studios and as a key character in DC Studios’ The Batman Part II (whenever that might actually arrive). The last time the world saw the live-action Bucky Barnes was in the exceptional Thunderbolts* film in 2025, but the Marvel Comics version hasn’t been quiet.
Quite the opposite is true, actually, and what’s next for Winter Soldier is peak cinema, though in comic book form. [Spoiler alert] Those who have followed the Armageddon series know Barnes didn’t make it out alive but, ultimately, that didn’t mean it was the end of him.
Not if Nick Fury Sr. has anything to say about it — one hell of a tale set to be told in Immortal Soldiers by Chip Zdarsky in 2027.

Nick Fury Sr. Brings Winter Soldier Back from the Dead
Per the official synposis of Immortal Soldiers #1 by Marvel Comics: “The finale of AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON arrived yesterday. Now, the Marvel Universe faces an uncertain future as a new era begins! Next month, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Wolverine, Luke Cage, and Miracleman assemble as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in AVENGERS #1 by Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto.”
It continued: “The new run spins out of Armageddon which ends with the world turning its back on super heroes as well as the events of the latest arc of Zdarsky’s Captain America where Cap and Doctor Doom team up to overthrow Mephisto in hell.”
It continued: “Also spinning out of Armageddon, IMMORTAL SOLDERS #1 by Zdarsky and Christian Rosado charts the future of the Marvel Universe, laying the groundwork for the biggest storylines on the horizon. First announced at New York Comic Con, the reveal of Ben Harvey’s main cover unveils that Bucky Barnes will co-star with Nick Fury Sr. in this essential one-shot, his tragic fate at the end of Armageddon reversed by Nick for this very purpose…”

That’s right — as you can see in the panels above, Nick Fury Sr. refused to let Bucky stay dead and, in the process, the absolute maximum amount of aura farming commenced following his resurrection. The resurrection itself isn’t the only twist for Bucky, mind you, because he’s also been given the ability to rapidly regenerate from fatal injuries now, and Nick Fury Sr., who also recruited a Ghost Rider for the war to come, is on a collision course, it seems, with his own son, Nick Fury Jr.
This is all the reason you need to make sure Immortal Soldier #1 is on your pull list when January 2027 rolls around, because it looks as if it’s a can’t-miss one-shot that’ll change everything going forward.
