ELKHART, Ind. (WSBT) — Elkhart and Kosciusko counties have each reported a case of measles as Indiana continues to see a rise in infections amid a nationwide resurgence of the disease.
According to the Indiana Department of Health, the state has reported 74 known measles cases this year, up from just 10 cases last year.
LaGrange County is among the hardest-hit areas in Indiana, with at least a dozen reported cases.
Health officials point to declining vaccination rates for the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine as a contributing factor to the increase.
Early symptoms of measles can include a runny nose, cough, fever, fatigue, loss of appetite and sensitivity to light. Other symptoms may include pink eye and small spots inside the mouth. A rash typically develops later.
Health officials encourage people to make sure their vaccinations are up to date and to contact a healthcare provider if they suspect they may have measles. Because the disease is highly contagious, anyone experiencing symptoms should call ahead before visiting a medical facility.
