Scream icon Neve Campbell has officially addressed her future with the Scream franchise. Sydney Prescott will return in Scream 8.

Campbell told the Associated Press that Scream 8 is one of her upcoming projects. She revealed no further details, confirming only, “I’ll be in it.”

Neve Campbell Returns as Sydney Prescott in Scream 8

Campbell previously returned as Sydney Prescott in Scream 7 after a pay dispute kept her out of Scream VI. Campbell’s returned after Spyglass Media Group fired Scream VI star Melissa Barrera in late 2023 after the actress made political comments on social media. Her co-star, Jenna Ortega, dropped out soon after, as did director Christopher Landon, and the entire project had to be reset.

Scream 8 was already in development before Scream 7 opened in theaters in February. Campbell had expressed an interest in returning to the series, but nothing was official at the time. Lilla Zuckerman and Nora Zuckerman are writing the script. In February, franchise creator Kevin Williamson, who replaced Landon as Scream 7’s director, said he and Campbell had already discussed sequel ideas, with Campbell coming up with the most promising pitch.

“When you’re sitting on the set at 3:00 in the morning, you’re like, ‘Well, what would Scream 8 be about?’ And you just start spitballing,” Williamson said. “And Neve had this great idea, and everyone seemed to run with it. So yeah, if this movie works and people want it, we’re here for the fans. So, if they want it, we’ll certainly give it to them.”

While Williamson was happy to bounce ideas around for Scream 8, he’s already stated that he’s not interested in returning to direct. Campbell’s fellow original Scream star Courteney Cox has said she may be interested in the job. Presently, no director is officially attached to Scream 8.

Campbell wasn’t the only Scream alum to reprise their role in Scream 7. Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard, and Cox each also returned, some through inventive means given some of their characters’ past fates. They could appear again in future installments of the slasher horror series, though Campbell remains the only confirmed returning star. For his part, Lillard says he feels ashamed of being in Scream 7 after the Barrera controversy.

Scream 7 received mostly negative reviews upon its release. It has a “rotten” 29% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics calling it “Less a return to Scream’s roots than a disappointing creative regression.” CBR’s Scream 7 review expressed similar sentiments, calling it a “cringeworthy nostalgia play.” It also suggested that the sequel “killed the franchise,” but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

However, audiences enjoyed it more. It has a 73% positive user score on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans say “Ghostface remains a reliable thrill… even if some plot beats feel comfortably familiar.” Audiences also showed up to watch the movie in theaters. Scream 7 is the highest-grossing Scream movie, earning $214 million from the global box office against a $45 million production budget.

Scream 7 is streaming now on Prime Video.
