On the 25-year anniversary year of Gilmore Girls, two of Rory’s (Alexis Bledel) former beaus have weighed in on the perennial debate among factions of fans: Team Dean, Team Jess or Team Logan.

Jared Padalecki — who portrays Dean Forester, Rory’s first boyfriend notable for their puppy love relationship and, in later seasons, marital infidelity — and Matt Czuchry — a fellow Yale classmate who plays Rory’s most serious partner and failed fiancé — opened up about their thoughts during a reunion for People‘s Sexiest Man Alive issue, under the banner “Hotties from the Aughties.”

Most shockingly, Padalecki, Jess’s most fervent on-screen hater, told the outlet, noting the irony, “I’m team Jess, funny enough. Just knowing the show and having some idea of where Rory was in her life. They all were flawed, let’s be clear. Well, I’ll say Dean was flawed. They all had their issues, but today I’m team Jess.” (In a similar twist, Milo Ventimiglia — known for his portrayal of OG bad-boy Jess Mariano — is a loyal Dean supporter.)

Meanwhile, in an answer that very much channels Logan Huntzberger’s confident spirit, Czuchry said, “It’s kind of changed for me over the course of time. I think right now, because we had that part on Netflix that went back, and we had that whole aspect too, which was great, it was so much fun — but I think if he changes his life, then I could see Logan coming back and being with Rory. He would be in a completely different place in his life.” (The Friday Night Lights alum is referencing Netflix’s four-part revival A Year in the Life, in which Rory and Logan, though partnered and engaged, respectively, engage in a no-strings-attached affair.)

Czuchry’s response mirrors that of the elder Gilmore girl, played by Kelly Bishop, who revealed last fall that she is decidedly Team Logan: “There is something about Logan. There’s something about his acting that I particularly liked in working with him, is he had a very manly quality, where the other guys were like boys, great boys. But Logan was like an old movie star, like a man.”

Gilmore Girls is currently streaming on Hulu and Netflix.
