The Memphis Art Museum has announced plans to open in December 2026 in a new 122,000-square-foot  center designed by Herzog & de Meuron. Local firm archimania is the architect of record, while landscape architecture is by OLIN. The visual identity of the scheme has been led by Pentagram.

The scheme is expected to expand the museum’s exhibition space by 50 percent and introduce new public areas overlooking the Mississippi River. Located on the river bluff, the design features a transparent facade, a 10,000-square-foot street-level courtyard, and a 50,000-square-foot rooftop sculpture garden.

The design of the scheme includes the use of laminated timber to emphasize natural tones drawn from the river’s clay banks, with wood detailing to honor Memphis’s industrial heritage. Inside, the museum will contain expanded classrooms, galleries, and community spaces.
