This past Saturday, Kris Jenner celebrated her 70th birthday with a James Bond–themed party at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s Beverly Hills mansion. The event was packed to the brim with A-listers, including all of the Kardashian-Jenner children, Beyoncé, Oprah Winfrey, Mark Zuckerberg, and the Biebers. Despite all the possibility for really good gossip, the biggest drama to emerge from the night is a petty saga about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s inclusion in an Instagram photo dump. The Brits are offended, Meghan and Harry want a low profile, and Kim Kardashian is reportedly “pissed off.” All this over an Instagram post? Well, yes and no. Let’s start at the beginning.
Kris’s party took place on November 8, the same evening as the annual star-studded Baby2Baby charity gala. Harry and Meghan went to the gala first, where they posed for photos with Serena Williams and helped raise money for mothers and children in need. Then, they made their way to Beverly Hills to celebrate Kris. Paparazzi were stationed outside and got some photos of the couple holding hands on their way into the party.
After the weekend, British tabloids started getting riled up about the Sussexes’ big night out, specifically because it fell on the same weekend as Remembrance Sunday, the U.K.’s day of celebrating the country’s veterans. The Daily Mail noted that it was a “solemn weekend” in the U.K. compared to Harry and Meghan’s “jam-packed weekend of glitz and glamour.” The tabloid also pointed out that while Harry wore a poppy on his lapel, the classic accessory of Remembrance Sunday, Meghan “notably failed” to pin one to her gown.
A source who allegedly works with the royal family called Meghan and Harry’s outing “tacky” in “Page Six.” “It truly shows that Harry is so far removed from the rest of the family. These people may be stars in America, but the pure ostentatiousness is at odds with what Prince William is trying to do with his life and the monarchy,” the source told the outlet. (Queen Camilla did just wear a brooch made of 206 diamonds and three emeralds to a Remembrance Day ceremony, but sure.)
Then Kris and Kim posted to Instagram.
These posts originally contained photos of Meghan and Harry having what appeared to be a really good time. In the pics, which still exist on “Page Six,” the couple posed and danced with Kris and Meghan got a solo snap with Kim. Pretty inoffensive images, if you ask me. However, on Tuesday, Kim and Kris removed the photos of Harry and Meghan from their respective carousels.
On Wednesday, a source claimed in “Page Six” that a representative for Harry and Meghan had asked for the photos to be taken down. “They don’t want to piss off the royal family while they are trying to reconcile,” the source said. Seems like it was too late for that, seeing as everybody already knew they were at the party and saw all the pictures, but maybe that’s why I don’t work in PR. Later that day, People reported that the couple had checked “no” on a photo-consent form, and that was the reason their photos had been removed. However, the next day (today, if you’re keeping track), a new source told People: “There were no consent forms.” A twist!
According to the Daily Mail, this entire debacle has earned the ire of Kim, who is reportedly “pissed off.” “Kim was like, ‘You’ve already been papped outside and you were at the Baby2Baby event the same night being photographed like Meghan Trainor and Paris Hilton, so what’s the problem,’” a source told the British tabloid. Whether or not Kim actually said this, it’s kind of a good point.
Okay, well, after nearly a week of coverage, I think it’s time to wrap this up. I need better gossip from this party and nothing more about Meghan and Harry’s somewhat misguided efforts to be both Hollywood famous and on the royals’ good side. Who hooked up? Who got too drunk? What do Justin Bieber and Jeff Bezos talk about? Give the people what they really want.
