Work is beginning on an $81 million expansion of a hospital in Dothan.
Birmingham contractor Robins & Morton is the general contractor for Southeast Health Medical Center’s expansion of its emergency department and bed tower.
The project is scheduled to be completed in 2028.
Goodwyn Mills Cawood is the architect.
The project has four phases, which include adding 22,693 square feet to the emergency department and renovating 23,990 existing square feet. Two patient floors with 52 new inpatient beds will be added above the emergency department.
Upon completion, treatment spaces will be able to accommodate up to 75,000 visits annually. The medical center will also add a CT scanner and a safe treatment area for behavioral health patients.
In addition, revamped waiting and seating areas will add natural daylight.
ED Medical Director Foy G. Mann said the medical center emergency room currently treats about 60,000 patients a year, with that number expected to grow.
“This expansion allows us to keep pace with the increasing demand for emergency services,” Mann said.
The medical center is Houston County’s largest employer, with more than 3,400 employees. Southeast Health Medical Center is the region’s only Level II trauma center, a chest pain center and one of four comprehensive stroke centers in the state.
“We are excited to begin work on this project that will expand healthcare services for the tri-state area,” Robins & Morton Operations Manager Ashley Dyer said. “We are grateful to Southeast Health for the opportunity to build an exceptional addition that will leave a lasting, positive impact.”
