The man widely recognized as one of the world’s greatest race car designers is being profiled in a documentary feature from Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity, Whisper Group and Mark Stewart Productions (MSP).
Turbulence: The Greatest Mind in Formula One [working title] will follow Newey as he embarks on his next chapter after he surprised the motorsports world at the beginning of 2025 by leaving Red Bull to join Aston Martin Aramco.
The doc has behind the scenes access to Newey’s new team’s Silverstone campus and the film will follow him as he attempts to design a World Championship- challenging car for the British brand, led by owner Lawrence Stroll. Widely seen as a GOAT in his field, Newey has won 12 World Constructors’ Championships and 14 World Drivers’ Championships.
Affleck said Turbulence is “about so much more than just racing, it’s about a living legend whose unrivaled career is full of ambition and reinvention.” “It’s those deep human attributes that we at Artists Equity feel so connected to and want to share in the stories we tell,” he added. “We’re honored to help bring Adrian’s story to life alongside all of our incredible partners.”
Artists Equity has dabbled in sports projects before with Believers: Boston Red Sox made with Tom Brady’s Religion of Sports and Air, the biographical drama about the origin of the iconic basketball shoeline.
British production house Whisper, meanwhile, was revealed by Deadline to be launching a U.S. hub this morning and is in Vegas for the grand prix, where Turbulence is being announced. The company also recently partnered with Brady on Amazon’s Brady & The Blues.
In collaboration with F1 and Aston Martin Aramco Formula One team, Turbulence will be executive produced by Affleck, Damon, and Kyle Wheeler for Artists Equity, Brian Venturo and Stephen O’Connor, Drew Masters, Chris Grubb, Sunil Patel and Emma Everitt for Whisper, and by Stewart for MSP. The film will be executive produced and directed by Patrick Mark and Michael Tolajian.
