Warning: This article includes SPOILERS for Wednesday season 2, parts 1 and 2!

Netflix’s Wednesday missed the perfect opportunity to introduce one underrated Addams Family character who would’ve been a great fit with season 2’s storyline. After three years, Wednesday returned to the small screen with a two-part second season packed with drama and mystery.

As promised, Wednesday season 2 continued to expand the Addams Family’s role in the story. Guest characters like Morticia and Gomez stepped into supporting capacities. Additionally, the show introduced more beloved characters from the franchise. Luckily, there was no shortage of odd and eccentric members in the Addams Family tree to add to the Netflix show.

The newest additions to Wednesday are Grandmama Frump, Varicose, and Ophelia. By far, the most surprising and fun addition to the group was the pet Venus flytrap Cleopatra. However, they missed out on the perfect opportunity to introduce an underrated Addams Family character who would enhance Thing’s story arc.

In the Addams Family franchise, Thing isn’t the only disembodied hand that joins the eccentric family. In the 1964 sitcom, Princess Aunt Millie comes to visit Morticia and Gomez in the episode “Morticia Meets Royalty,” and she brings along her handmaiden – a literal hand.

Aunt Millie’s handmaiden is Lady Fingers, and she is immediately taken with Thing. Like Thing, she’s a hand that lives in a box. She frequently wears jewelry and has her nails done. Unlike Thing’s box, Lady Fingers’ box is decorated with gems and baroque-style fabric.

She goes along with Millie when the aunt leaves the Addams’ home, but the impact of her leaving her soulmate is clear. By the end of the episode, Thing plans to propose to her, and she accepts. By the time they appear in Halloween with the New Addams Family, the two appear to be married, and she’s working as Grandmama Frump’s handmaid.

Although they give her a new backstory, The New Addams Family Series brings back the underrated character, making her the love interest of Thing once again. They meet when Cousin Pretensia brings Lady Fingers to the Addams Family’s home. They fall in love. They’re once again separated. However, by the end of the episode, they reunite and get engaged.

The fact that Thing gets a major storyline and romance in the original sitcom proves that he’s just as significant a member of the Addams Family as the humans.

Wednesday Season 2’s Should’ve Introduced Lady Fingers In The Support Group

Although he was already important in season 1, Thing’s emotional journey as a dismembered hand is one of the biggest subplots in Wednesday season 2. He struggles with the fact that he doesn’t know where he came from or have anyone who relates to him. Consequently, he decides to join a support group for “parts” that are disconnected from the whole.

There are a surprisingly large number of attendees, allowing Thing to feel connected with other people like him. This would have been the perfect moment to introduce Lady Fingers in Wednesday. She could have also attended the group alongside Thing. Since none of the others are dismembered hands, Lady Fingers and Thing would likely have clicked.

The presence of Lady Fingers would’ve been a fun deep-cut for fans of The Addams Family. It would’ve fulfilled the promise to introduce more characters from The Addams Family. What’s more, Thing and Lady Fingers’ storyline would’ve deepened Thing’s storyline. He would’ve had emotional support from someone with firsthand experience as he learned about his past.

Thing Deserves To Have A Romance Just Like Everyone Else

Wednesday season 2 acknowledges the harsh reality that the Addams Family treats Lurch and Thing like they’re servants, rather than actual members of the family. It’s hard to see how inconsiderate they are towards Thing, especially since he plays such a big role in Netflix’s Wednesday.

While Wednesday’s script gives Thing more agency than the family does, it feels like the script also treats Thing like a plot device instead of a character. Thing doesn’t get many storylines that focus just on him. His friendship with Enid and the support group are the only two times when it seems like it’s his story.

It could be argued that Thing finding out his connection to Isaac is his storyline. However, that revelation still felt like an afterthought compared to Puglsey and the Zombie, or Isaac’s relationship with Franciose, or Gomez’s powers getting stolen.

Thing should be given the same storylines as every other supporting character. He deserves character development like Enid and Bianca. He deserves to prank people like Agnes. What’s more, he deserves romance like Wednesday and Enid. I’m willing to bet that fans who hated the romance subplots still would’ve jumped on board with Thing and Lady Fingers.

Wednesday Season 3 Could Still Introduce Lady Fingers

Thing poised on a table in Wednesday

Even though Wednesday season 2 missed the perfect opportunity to introduce Lady Fingers, season 3 could make up for the oversight by introducing her. Luckily, they have another prime opportunity based on the way Wednesday season 2 part 2’s ending set up the upcoming Addams Family mysteries storyline.

In Halloween with the New Addams Family, Lady Fingers is a handmaiden to Grandmama Frump. The third season set up Grandmama Frump as a bigger presence since she’s keeping Ophelia captive. It seems inevitable that Wednesday, Thing, and maybe even Uncle Fester will most likely go to Grandmama’s house at some point, now that Wednesday knows that Ophelia’s alive.

Thing could meet Lady Fingers when Wednesday goes to confront Grandmama Frump about Ophelia’s captivity in Wednesday season 3. Lady Fingers could be the handmaiden of the family matriarch, like she was in Halloween with the New Addams Family. When they meet, Thing and Lady Fingers could hit it up and start a romance.

The only reason that Wednesday’s team might be hesitant to add Lady Fingers is that it would add more to the CGI budget. They would have to green-screen another actor who plays Lady Fingers. However, the addition of the underrated Addams Family character in Wednesday would be worth the cost.
