Pantone has announced its Color of the Year for 2026, and unexpectedly, it’s white – an off-white, to be precise. PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer is a calming, ethereal shade that’s not quite a brilliant white, but it’s not overly nuanced either – it’s just a nice white.

It’s the first time Pantone has selected a white shade as its Color of the Year since 1999, when the inaugural hue was announced at the turn of the millennium (which was a very bold Cerulean). But why now? After a year in which 2025 has seen everyone embracing bolder, more adventurous colors, why has Pantone opted for such a serene, understated shade?

decorating with white and seeking a shade that works effortlessly with any style and in any light, Cloud Dancer is one to keep on your list.

color trends, feels right. It’s a moment to strip things back, to pause, and to look at what is essentially a blank canvas.

Of course, Pantone’s Color of the Year always goes beyond being just a hyped-up shade; it also coincides with creative initiatives. In 2026, Pantone will bring the ‘blank canvas’ that Cloud Dancer represents to life by inspiring and spotlighting artists to create their own interpretations of the Color of the Year. It will launch a new initiative that celebrates and supports both the artist community and color enthusiasts. Pantone will also release surprise limited-edition designs from artists across all areas of design, from graphics to fashion.

‘We are living in a transitional time where people are seeking truth, possibility, and a new way of living,’ adds Laurie Pressman, Vice-President, Pantone Color Institute. ‘PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer is an airy white hue that exemplifies our search for balance between our digital future and our primal need for human connection, a liminal space that is a launchpad for creative expression, as individuals and communities are experimenting beyond traditional boundaries, opening the door to increased imagination and innovation.’

There’s no denying that, when it comes to interiors, this is an exceptionally versatile shade. At Homes & Gardens, we’ve spent much of the year debating whether white is out of style – but always with the acknowledgment that, in truth, white is timeless. Perhaps it’s about time it was celebrated for precisely the qualities that are so often criticised. Cloud Dancer may not be the most daring Pantone Color of the Year, but could it be the most enduring? Quite possibly.
