Before dawn on Wednesday, police officers in Nazareth quietly arrested the city’s former mayor, Ali Salam. Hours later, news broke that Maj. Gen. Meni Binyamin – head of Lahav 433, the police unit often described as Israel’s FBI – had also been detained. Investigators suspect Binyamin leaked information from an undercover probe to Salam, who is accused of channeling public money to a large and powerful Arab crime family.
