The son of murdered Beatle John Lennon says his mother has stepped away from the public eye.

Sean Ono Lennon, 50, told viewers of CBS Sunday Morning that the artist Yoko Ono is now living in upstate New York.

“She’s slowed down a lot, and she’s retired,” Lennon said, according to The Daily Beast.

Lennon said he sees her for about half of the year.

For decades, Ono lived in The Dakota, a historic apartment building on New York’s Central Park West, in the home she shared with John Lennon.

Lennon and Ono were married in 1969 and the two made headlines with their performance art and opposition to the Vietnam War.

Lennon was murdered by a disturbed fan on Dec. 8, 1980 outside The Dakota while returning from a late-night recording session.

Sean, who was five when his father died, said his mother “deserves to kind of sit back.”

He is now acting as caretaker for his father’s recording legacy, as well as Ono’s artistic work.

“I’m just doing my best to help make sure that the younger generation doesn’t forget about The Beatles and John and Yoko,” Lennon said.

“She believed she could change the world, and she did…now she is able to be quiet—listen to the wind and watch the sky,” her daughter, Kyoko Ono Cox, 62, said in a recent biography of Ono written by David Sheff.
