Two original Stranger Things stars were the ones who convinced the Duffer Brothers to finally fix one huge Wheeler family complaint for season 5. Stranger Things season 5 has seen the Wheeler family become more important than ever before, with the youngest sibling, Holly, having been kidnapped by Vecna. Their parents are also in the hospital after a Demogorgon attack.
However, it was Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike, and Natalia Dyer, who portrays Nancy, that went to the Duffer Brothers to insist on them sharing more scenes together. People reports that, during a Stranger Things panel at The Paley Museum in New York City, Wolfhard explained how the pair asked for more scenes together in the final season:
We wanted scenes together, and like we asked the Duffers — I think you guys were already planning on putting us together, but it was something that I think we really were wanting and it was the best. It was so fun.
Despite beng siblings, Mike and Nancy have barely interacted with one another since the start of the series. Their journeys have often led them to team up with other Stranger Things characters, Mike often with his friends, and Nancy with older heroes like Jonathan and Steve. They had some moments during season 1, but not many notable ones.
This has been a fan complaint for some time, especially considering how much both siblings are readily involved in every season’s story. Luckily, Holly’s kidnapping was the perfect way to bring the pair together. They work at the hospital to get information from their injured mother, learning Vecna was the one who took her.

Mike looks shocked in Stranger Things season 4
Stranger Things season 5 volume 1 ends with the pair in very different places: Mike is in the military base trying to rescue the kids being targeted by Vecna, while Nancy is in the Upside Down, heading to Hawkins Lab inside. However, their short stint working together addressed criticism about their lack of interaction throughout the show.
Due to the large swath of characters Stranger Things features, it hasn’t been easy for certain characters to team up or converse with each other. Season 5 was also the first instance of Will and Steve having a conversation with each other across the whole series. Will also teamed up with Robin for an episode, the pair forming a bond unseen before now.
Although Wolfhard and Dyer were the ones who addressed Mike and Nancy’s lack of interaction, Stranger Things season 5 is primed to give plenty of other character team-ups a spotlight, depending on how events unfold. With only four episodes remaining, now is the time for characters who haven’t interacted much to do so before the series ends.
Stranger Things season 5 volume 2 arrives Christmas Day at 8 p.m. ET on Netflix.
