Strong winds with gusts up to 80 km/h could lead to power outages in the Greater Toronto Area and across southern Ontario on Tuesday night.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Oshawa, Oakville and beyond, saying to expect northwesterly gusts on Tuesday evening.

Local utility outages are possible as gusts could reach up to 70 km/h or 80 km/h, the weather agency says.

The gusts could last overnight but are expected to diminish for areas near Georgian Bay later on Tuesday and early on Wednesday for areas near Lake Ontario.

The GTA was also under a special weather statement for snow and freezing rain on Tuesday morning.
