Chris Hemsworth is back as Thor in Avengers: Doomsday, and Marvel has used his return to retcon two major aspects of his last appearance. The first look at the god of thunder’s role has now been revealed thanks to a Thor-centric Doomsday trailer playing exclusively in theaters before Avatar: Fire and Ash.

The footage is rather quiet and somber, focusing primarily on Thor in a forest praying to Odin for protection as he prepares to go on a mission to reunite with Love. A full look at Thor’s design can be pieced together throughout the trailer. While a new costume was expected (as that’s standard for the MCU to increase merchandising), the god’s actual appearance includes some notable retcons.

Thor’s Appearance In Avengers: Doomsday Is Totally Different Than In Love & Thunder

Thor’s costume in Doomsday looks identical to the one he wore in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The more silvery base to it can be seen, along with a slightly darker red cape. Thor also notably has a shaved head once again, matching the haircut he sported in Thor: Ragnarok and Infinity War.

This wouldn’t be all that surprising if not for Phase 4 shifting Thor’s look in a radical way after Endgame. When he was last seen in Thor: Love and Thunder, Hemsworth’s character had a very different physical appearance than in his Phase 3 outings. He previously had long, golden blonde hair and a new, brightly colored costume to fit with director Taika Waititi’s more comedic version of the character.

Rather than retain one of Thor’s best costumes, Doomsday is effectively retconning that part of his character development. He’s reverted to the look that the Russo brothers are most familiar with. These visual changes are one thing, but it Thor’s hair and costume aren’t the only elements Doomsday is rewriting.

Thor Has Taken Stormbreaker Back In Avengers: Doomsday, Too

It’s also notable that Thor is shown holding Stormbreaker in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer. The weapon introduced in Avengers: Infinity War was the god’s main weapon of choice in his last three appearances. However, Thor: Love and Thunder’s ending changed the status quo for him.

Thor was last seen wielding a rebuilt Mjolnir, with his adopted daughter, Love, possessing Stormbreaker. The move appeared to be a moment where Thor reclaims his iconic weapon and officially moves past utilizing the giant ax. That’s now changed for some reason in Avengers: Doomsday.

Why Thor has traded in Mjolnir for Stormbreaker is not yet clear, but it could be tied to what happened to Love or what weapon is best fit for the god returning to action to take on Doctor Doom. In any case, rather than Marvel continuing to have Thor use Mjolnir after Love and Thunder, Avengers: Doomsday will retcon passing on the powerful weapon.
