Several new voices have joined the station as YO1 continues to focus on its work in supporting the local community.

In September, Nick Hancock took over YO1’s breakfast show, bringing with him a wealth of experience from across the radio industry.

Julie Blackburn and Cai Sherlock started new daily shows, and Aaron Blanchard joined the on-air team.

Julie is also the station’s community engagement manager and is always interested to hear from any local organisations who’d like some similar support.

YO1’s local engagement continued with on-air interviews with community groups and free publicity for not-for-profit organisations.

Meanwhile, the station’s partnership with The Press is now in its third year and, in 2025, included support for the Community Awards and the recently held Local IQ Business Awards.

In June, YO1 also worked with The Press on the YO1 Radio Sports Awards at the York Barbican. The glitzy awards ceremony celebrated success from across York and North Yorkshire in a whole range of sporting activities – from professional sport to community and school teams.

The event attracted well over 300 nominations and the judges had a tough time narrowing things down to the finalists.

YO1’s managing director, Wayne Chadwick, said the sports awards were “undoubtedly one of the main highlights” of the year.

“We were so proud to showcase some exceptional individuals and teams at an iconic venue and with a bit of showbiz glamour,” he said.

“We are really looking forward to bringing the event back again – bigger and even better – in 2026.”

Looking to the new year, Wayne said YO1 will be “even more focussed on our partnership working with local businesses and community organisations”.

He said the station will also be developing its podcast offer, which will include “making more use of our city centre facilities in Goodramgate as well as our main studios off James Street”.

One area that YO1 will continue to develop into 2026 is the support it gives to young people and to those looking for a career in radio or other related media.

Dave Parker looks after the station’s work placement schemes and said providing opportunities for young people is “something of we are particularly proud of”.

“We work with individuals, our local universities, colleges and schools to offer placements and work experience to those interested in a future career in what is becoming an increasingly competitive media industry,” he said.

“Our success in this area is self-evident,” Dave added. “We have several full-time staff at YO1, including on-air presenters, who have joined us through our work placement schemes and there are many examples of work placement students and former staff members moving on to successful careers in the commercial radio sector, the BBC and ITV.”

At the core of YO1 is the radio station itself which broadcasts to York and North Yorkshire on all the available platforms, including FM, DAB+ digital radio, online and on smart devices.

YO1 broadcasts to York on 102.8FM, to Selby on 90FM, and across the whole of North Yorkshire on DAB+.

YO1 also controls the local digital radio service for York, which allows the station to provide facilities for other radio services to broadcast to the city – including York Hospital Radio and URY – the student radio service at the University of York.
