As one of Netflix’s most influential original series prepares to sign off, Stranger Things is set to end its decade-long run with a finale designed as a shared viewing moment. The final episode of Season 5 will arrive at the same time on streaming and on the big screen, turning the show’s closing chapter into a global fan event. The move reflects the cultural impact the series has built since its debut and signals Netflix’s intent to give the story a send-off that feels larger than a standard streaming release.

Created by Matt and Ross Duffer, Stranger Things has followed a group of teenagers in the fictional town of Hawkins as they confront supernatural threats from another dimension. Over the years, the show has grown into a pop culture phenomenon, blending sci-fi, horror and coming-of-age drama. Season 5 marks the end of this journey.

Netflix streaming date and Theatrical screenings
The finale will drop on Netflix on December 31 at 8 pm ET, which corresponds to 5 pm PT. This follows the same release pattern used for the earlier volumes of Season 5. By the time the final episode premieres, all previous episodes from the season will already be available to stream.
Alongside its Netflix release, the finale will also be screened in a limited number of theatres. According to Deadline, what was initially announced as a smaller fan event has expanded significantly. The final episode is now set to play in more than 620 theatre locations across the US and Canada, with screenings starting on December 31 and continuing through January 1.

Major cinema chains, including AMC, Regal and Cinemark, are part of the rollout, along with several regional exhibitors. AMC’s involvement is seen as a notable shift, as the chain rarely screens Netflix titles. Fans can check participating venues and reserve seats through Netflix’s official theatre-finder website, ST5Finale.com.

Deadline has reported that these screenings are not structured as traditional ticketed events. Reservation fees are converted into concession vouchers, meaning attendance numbers rather than box-office revenue will be used to assess the event’s reach.
