Pixel beta users who opted out ahead of the next test build are hitting an unexpected snag, as the updater keeps warning that leaving the program will trigger a full data wipe instead of offering the usual clean exit to stable Android 16 QPR1.
Many users have taken to Reddit and Google’s own community forums to report the same issue. MrHarryHD, a Pixel 8 Pro owner, voiced what many are experiencing: “I opted out over 4 weeks ago and I still see ‘leave beta with data wipe’ and I know the stable has been out for a few weeks now.”
But they aren’t alone. Users with various other Pixel phones are stuck in the same boat.
Under normal circumstances, Google’s beta program allows users to transition back to stable releases without losing their data, provided they opt out before installing the next quarterly platform release. This time, however, that safety net isn’t working as expected. Users who followed the proper exit procedures are finding themselves caught in limbo.
Some users on QPR1 Beta 3 have reportedly seen the coveted “leave with no data wipe” option, but those on Beta 3.1 remain stuck.
If this all sounds familiar, it is because something similar happened earlier with Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3.1, where a build timestamp quirk left many testers stuck without a stable OTA until Google fixed the path, and wiping was the only immediate escape for some.
That said, Google might be looking into the issue already. I spotted a complaint on the Issue Tracker, where a Google employee responded to the complaint, stating, “We have passed this to the development team and will update this issue with more information as it becomes available.”
While this doesn’t guarantee an immediate fix, hopefully, it means that we’ll see a proper build that doesn’t require a data wipe to go live for affected users soon.
