In a climactic final showdown that feels similar to the very first season’s ending, Eleven tragically sacrifices herself so that all of her friends and loved ones can survive and Upside Down will be destroyed for good.
Or did she?
At the very end of the episode, when Mike is imagining everyone’s futures, he proposes that Kali actually helped Eleven fake her death and escape. So now she’s exploring on her own and found a place to settle down and be at peace.
Max asks how they are supposed to know whether or not that’s true and Mike says they can’t, “But I choose to believe it is.” Then Max, Dustin, Lucas, and Will all agree that they believe it’s true, too. The implication being Eleven is still alive somewhere…probably.
