The Aviator in Sculthorpe says it is shutting down after facing increasing financial pressures.

The venue announced its closure with immediate effect on Tuesday via its Facebook page.

In a statement, it said: “Following a slow winter and the impending financial implications of Rachael Reeves’ budget, we have no option but to close with immediate effect.

“We would like to thank everyone who has supported us.

“Hospitality is being destroyed by the government and many businesses can no longer continue.

“It’s time for us to close our doors.”

Critics have accused Rachel Reeves of “sentencing countless pubs to death” through her “crippling” budget tax hikes.

Business rates for firms are set to increase in April due to a combination of a revaluation of the rateable value of buildings and the end of a 40pc discount on bills for the hospitality industry.

The government says it has introduced a £4.3bn support package over the next three years to help businesses that have seen their bills soar because of the revaluation.

The owner of the Swan Inn in Mattishall, Carol Kenny, also claimed that the chancellor’s budget was the “final nail in the coffin” for the pub, which closed in December.

And some landlords in Norfolk have decided to ban Labour MPs in protest at the budget.

Phil Cutter, owner of the Murderers in Norwich, claimed it had “taxed out” publicans.

He said his wage bill has gone up by more than £500 a week on the back of the last two budgets.

“Our once great institution of hospitality and pubs is going to be eternally in decline, and we need support immediately from the government,” he added.

Other pubs across the county, including the Waggon and Horses in Griston, have also joined Mr Cutter in banning Labour MPs.
