Manchester United face a pivotal month as the January transfer window begins to unfold. Ruben Amorim’s side are in the hunt for a Champions League spot but may need reinforcements to get themselves over the line.
The team have provided reasons to be optimistic throughout the season, overcoming tough moments to stay in contention for the top four. United will hope to bounce back from their underwhelming draw with Wolves and reassert themselves with a positive result against Leeds on Sunday.
Ahead of the transfer window, Amorim’s side were linked with several high-profile midfielders but the Portuguese coach has been given an unexpected squad boost at the start of the New Year. Here is a closer look at some of the biggest stories surrounding Old Trafford.
Marcus Rashford uncertainty
Marcus Rashford is relishing his loan spell at Barcelona but fresh doubts have arisen over whether the England international will remain at the club permanently. The 28-year-old has made it clear that he wishes to stay with the Catalan giants beyond this season.
The United loanee has showcased his quality in Spain, scoring seven and registering 11 assists in 24 games. However, Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo reports that Rashford is one of three Barcelona players facing an uncertain future at the Camp Nou.

Rashford, alongside Robert Lewandowski and defender Andreas Christensen, is among a trio of stars whose Barcelona deals end in the summer. It is claimed that the United forward has had positive feedback from Barcelona but it is not yet a formality that his parent club will trigger his £26million buy clause.
The Spanish club will reportedly attempt to lower the agreed fee, with Barcelona’s financial constraints well-publicised. It is added that Rashford could improve his pressing and defensive work.

Despite the speculation, Rashford shared a positive message on social as he welcomed in the New Year. He wrote: “As 2025 comes to a close, I’m grateful for a year of change and self reflection. Stepping into 2026 feeling excited, motivated, and ready to be ambitious both in sport and life.”
Man Utd make transfer decision
Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Toby Collyer has been recalled from his loan spell at West Bromwich Albion. The 21-year-old made 12 Championship appearances before returning to Old Trafford.
Collyer has been sidelined since picking up an injury in November, leading to his loan spell being cut short. A United club statement explained that the academy graduate had returned to focus on his fitness, while also potentially adding to the options at Amorim’s disposal.

The defensive midfielder featured 13 times for United last term. However, he was unexpectedly called out by Amorim recently as the United boss made a wider point about some of the club’s youngsters being promoted to the first team too early in their development.
“He (Collyer) played (for United),” Amorim said in December. “He’s from the academy. He played here. He went to West Bromwich. He’s not playing. He played for Manchester United. So sometimes it’s not because he’s from the academy or whatever. It’s the situation, what’s happened.”
