Well, if you haven’t gotten your fill of a sappy Christmas on HBO Max by now, you’d better get to it. The end of the month will see a major clear-out of Hallmark-type seasonal content. Additionally, all but the first movie of the Harry Potter franchise are peacing out, as are plenty of classic and popular hits like Taxi Driver and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, as well as HBO documentaries and Max Originals.
DC origin series Pennyworthis one you’ll want to catch before it leaves if you’re a Batman fan. It follows the young Alfred Pennyworth in 1960s London as he forms a security company and eventually starts working with Thomas and Martha Wayne, prior to Bruce being born. You’ll also want to imbibe in one of horror icon Stephen King’s greatest film adaptations, Misery, which also features one of Kathy Bates’ all-time greatest performances as a former nurse turned serial killer who holds her favorite romance novelist captive and subjects him to physical and psychological abuse.
And since we all love a good jaw-dropping documentary, I highly recommend watching The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin. The five-part docuseries examines the rise of the cult-like Remnant Fellowship, a weight-loss-based Christian church, and its charismatic late founder, Gwen Shamblin Lara, who developed the faith-based diet program Weigh Down Workshop. The docuseries explores her controversial life and teachings, as well as the Fellowship’s beliefs and practices.
